By not taking Doctrines, you get all the restricted troops.

If you can't win without Doctrines, then you're dead with them. That includes the free ones...

I get your point... in most games the regular list would be more then enough to forefill your needs for troops.

In my planned themed Guard army (I've planned a 1,500 point army) but it would be illegial without Doctrines (I have 2 Conscripts choices and 1 normal Platoon - when I've collected that, I'll add another platoon of course).

But then again it does make it more fluffy if you do and the only obvious downside is that they can be abused, but thats just like anything else really in 40k.

Basically, each army may spend up to five "doctrine points" which change the army in some way.

Some allow you to have a certain restricted troop type in the army such as conscript platoons, ogryns, ratlings etc. Others have more direct effects upon the battlefield, such as ignoring negative modifiers if being outnumbered and some change other aspects such as one gives the army a 4+ save for a certain amount per unit.

If you use doctrines, they restrict your choice of troops so unless you pick the Ogryn doctrine, you cannot include any at all. If you use a normal Guard army without doctrines, your allowed up to one unit.

Any questions?

+++If you use the list without doctrines, you're allowed as many of each restricted unit as you like (within the FOC of course, and assuming they're not 0-1 anyway). Where does it say otherwise FT?+++

Perhaps he was thinking of Ratling Snipers...

Of course your right, it's just that if you use Doctrines some troop types become off limits unless you choose the doctrine for them.
