Default Powerfists become useful on officers again!

To be honest, I'm really surprised noone else has picked up on this yet, but I'm 97% sure I'm right. Page 48 under "Retinues" states that Indie characters in a retinue are treated as upgrade characters until their retinue is wiped out. So seeing as all our characters are forced to take retinues anyways, no more singling out our officers.

Really?!

If so that's great news! I can finally justify buying the Forgeworld Commander!

That is true, but although it's not possible to single him out anymore, it's still not hard to plant five or more wounds on a bunch of Toughness 3 models. The officer will still likely be forced to make his own personal saves in most combats, so it's not as though he's untouchable until he's the last man standing; his survivability is just better than it used to be.

Although attacking rear armor now is handy for a Melta toting Command Squad.

Still, it gives the ability for the Commander to actually be able to deal some sort of damage in combat without being killed the second he steps up. Although I do admit that it's unlikely he'll get more than one swing or so anyway before he's flat on his back...
We really need Lightning Claws for Commanders...

Fair enough, but you obviously have to support him with another squad, use him in tandem with a CC geared command squad maybe.

Well that doesn't change a thing. Neither the command squad's potential to inflict damage nor the presence of an additional unit in the combat has any impact upon the number of wounds the enemy can mete out upon the command squad itself, thus inevitably forcing the officer to make independent saves.
