Default The future of the Catachans

I have been thinking about the faith of the Eldar Craftworld armies, and started to wonder if the Catachans might go the same way when GW comes with the new book.

One thing that might indicate that Catachans will now be part of the coming regular guard list would be if the jungle fighting rules are in the new rule book. Since I am yet buy the 5th ed book, I wonder if these rules are in the big book.

A way of having Catachans in the coming Imperial guard book would simply be to include a Catachan character, like Ironhand, and give him some special rules to benefit his army.
At the same time, rumours speaks about tanks getting a bigger showing in the new Dex, alongside the infantry platoons, so one wonders if Catachans can be squeezed in alongside, without robbing them of much of what makes them different.

Anyone that has heared anything?

There are no jungle fighting rules in the 5th edition rulebook. Besides, Jungle fighters are already included in the existing codex by way of taking the appropriate doctrines.

Still, the Catachan got a separate Death World codex that is downloadable and official. And that is the one I am refering too and the one I fear may go away.
Those rules gives more freedom of how you put together your squad, the soldiers are better fighters, and so on. I was thinking of may starting Guards anew and make some rebels, who would be from a Deathworld.

The amalgamation of the craftworld and codex Eldar lists didn't really sacrifice anything from either did it? Even if GW disqualify the Deathworld list I don't think you've anything to worry about. The Catachan list can mostly be represented with the right selection of doctrines from Codex: IG, so I expect such provisions will be made in the new one. I think Death World veterans are too popular to drop.

In the very worst case scenario; if GW completely remove Deathworld veterans in every capacity, it's still only going to matter in tournaments. In friendly games you're still going to be free to use the list. If your opponent won't let you use the Deathworld list then they're probably not worth playing against anyway.

Exactly. The deathworlds list is very difficult to use in a tournament anyways, so who cares. It would still function pretty well in 5th ed. I'd just substitute their current ability to see in jungle terrain to be more like being able to shoot at a target up to double the normal distance in cover without them getting a save. As far as I remember, most of the rest of the rules should be pretty much the same. A new guard 'dex might actually be beneficial to the list seeing as it will have a new armoury (sort of).

Ive used it in tournaments and crushed all but 2 of my enemies! (out of 6 games). Then they made it non-tournament legal and My Catachans have been sitting in the cold dark shelves of my garage ever since.

Catachan's really were dead by 4th ed.

The Codex is not 'official' in the same sense that kroot mercs are not 'official'.

yeah, im in agreement with jd. catachans are a dying breed since the only jungle games anyone would play are going to be between friends and even then few and far between. they may not be exactaly killed off, but they are in one hell of a coma :'(

Friends, that is the evil! Deathworld vets clearly deserve a separate codex asmuch as the different Space marine chapters! Truly a shame.

Well, we will see what happens.

Well, I bought 4 Catachan Battleforces and frankly, they're much more awesome than Cadians :P I would love to use the Deathworld rules but thing is; most of the tables I play with are city ruins

But given the chance. I'll play them Can't wait to see what they got in store for us

Zenny, when you really look at it, DWVs are just terrain specialists. In 4th ed, area terrain was area terrain and it didn't much matter what it really was, so after watching Full Metal Jacket, I was inspired to do a scenario where DWVs operated as they do in an urban environment instead of a jungle. We haven't had a chance to test it yet, but as long as you kept the terrain about as dense as jungle terrain, the codex would actually be slightly nerfed (everyone would be getting 4+ cover saves in city ruins anyways).

You could probably still apply these principles to 5th edition. Once i get a chance to really read through the new rulebook and the DWV codex again I'll see if the scenario would still work out or what kind of tweaking it would need, but I think it'd still be pretty functional. Give it a try and do some of my playtesting for me :P
