Default Has this been bought up before? Hunting Lances

I had a quick search but turned up nothing. I just found the reason I think if I go back to my guard why I'm going to include Rough Riders. Hunting lancees.

Now correct me if i'm wrong but does this mean that the lances are Lance weapons by definition? Just like Eldar shining Spears lances? In that they reduce Vehicle armor to 12?

O_O OK......you mean those, Eldar pansies and their Shiny Pointy Stick? But still we can't glance AV12 even if Hunting Lances are Lances.

Lance is a quality under the weapon description, not in the name itself.

Might be a fun house rule though.

Lance weapons are weapons with lance listed in their 'Type' (see page 27 of the rulebook), just like sniper weapons and ordnance weapons. Hunting lances do not have lance in their type field, so they do not benefit from that special rule. Indeed, they do not even have a weapon profile at all, so the complete rules for using hunting lances as close combat weapons is as written on page 46 of Codex: IG. A weapon's name does not have any bearing on its tabletop performance, and is supplied for fluff purposes only. Weapon prefixes may certainly hint at the nature of the weapon in question (e.g. 'mega', 'melta', 'sniper&#39, but have no true bearing on the rules.

Zenny makes a good point too (despite his hastily changed former reply...yes, I saw that ) - Even if hunting lances were lance weapons, it would be of no benefit to them whatsoever!

Tom has the complete thing, although a bit more verbose than my post...His means the same thing as I said really.

No.

Again some house rules would be fun to make a 'lance' close combat weapon, maybe give the cavalry the charging ability of a tank? Melta lances type of thing or something. Instead of the one hit striking back from ramming I think you'd have to roll for d6wounds(or more)at the damage that normally would strike back!

I can imagine a horde of warrior horsemen charging a line of tanks and cutting through two... maybe three tanks before the hits back and explosions killed them. Very poetic way to die for the Emperor.

With 5th edition rules, close combat attacks are generally going to be striking AV10 anyway, so Hunting Lances are already a viable AT weapon...but if that's not enough for you, just equip your rough riders with Meltabombs and represent them on the model with suitably modified lances.

The important thing is how fast I fixed it But since we're already hitting the rear armor in Close Combat now. They have a chance to pop some tanks but it's quite unlikely.

EDIT: Dangit! Tom beat me to it :P

I more liked the idea of continuing the charge really than the rest...I imagine it like countless little waves breaking down targets one by one and continuing the rush onward.

'Course the first unit in the way of a tank-shock/ramming move would hold their ground and likely stop them.

Ahh it's in the type, not the name. Fair enough. I don't have my codex on hand so I apologise.
