Default Usefulness of Lascannon teams in 5th Ed?

Personally I love the idea of a pure Lascannon team supporting the other infantry, despite the idea being mainly put down in 4th Ed due to survivability questions (as the unit will be a fire magnet, putting all your eggs in one basket thing). I was wondering whether in 5th Ed, it would become more of an option, with new LOS rules, to be able to place HW squads at the back in a supporting role, screening them with other troops, like the famous Guard stories we have today.

I don't think that will be viable since you cannot shoot through your own men now, and if you put them on higher terrain the enemy will have LOS on them.

The IG may have this special "platoon drill" rule (or something like that).(for 5th edition)

Meaning I can shoot through squads of the same platoon and not give the enemy a cover save. So now would be the time to attached lascannons to your command squads...

It'll be a rumour for next guard codex as there's nothing in the rule book about it :P

Sorry, I meant Heavy Weapons squad, I should have phrased that better. At the moment, they'd be picked off on like the first turn. But I want to lighten my Guard up to take more anti-personnel weapons that fit in with their equipment and seperate the heavy stuff into support roles. I am hoping that they will now be able to sit behind their platoons and blast through to enemy armour. Are there any other rules that will make them more useful in the upcoming 5th Ed?

The "platoon drill" rumour may allow you to attach Heavy weapons squads to your platoons (not sure how it's gonna work exactly, heck, GW probably haven't even decided yet!) so denying your opponent that cover save for shooting through your own troops. So they may come back in. However, they are always going to be more vulnerable.

I've played two games in 5th with my Guard, netting myself a win and a draw with a fairly ordinary selection of troops, with nothing cheesy and virtually no spamming of anything.

It really would make more sense for heavy weapons teams to be attached to the platoon, not the headquarters.

Yes, but attaching it to the "headquarters" section of the platoon (i.e. the JO and squad) is what we're referring to.
