Attaching the prefix 'Cadian' to all these models is perhaps a little misleading. There is no generic 'Imperial Guard' range of infantry miniatures. Most vehicles have no such regimental prefix as they are standard across the entire Imperium, but the men that form the Imperial Guard comprise myriad regiments from thousands of different worlds, most with their own unique uniform. You will never find an 'Imperial Guard infantry squad box set'...or at least if you do, upon closer inspection you will see that it is actually a 'Cadian shock troops box set'.

You see, the Cadians are now widely considered to be the standard Imperial Guard army. They didn't start off that way; Cadian shock troops were originally a new regiment added to complement the existing range of IG miniatures, but they have since become mainstream. A box of Cadian shock troops is in fact just a box of bog-standard Imperial Guard infantry. Cadian Kasrkin models are - in terms of the equipment they carry - Storm Troopers. The actual Kasrkin rules are in Codex: Armageddon, but they're identical to the Storm Trooper rules found in Codex: Imperial Guard, so the models are completely interchangeable without violating any WYSIWYG concerns (What You See Is What You Get).

There are in fact very few alternative Imperial Guard miniatures; the vast majority available are Cadians. Bottom line, they look like semi-futuristic soldiers without any particular flair or characteristic feature, and so the Cadians have become mainstream to the point that some people aren't even aware that there are other regiments out there (fluffwise).

Even if this were not so, it is important to remember that any miniature can be used to represent any unit so long as it looks the part and all weapons and equipment are represented on the model. So you can freely mix Catachans, Vostroyans, Elysians, Cadians, Tallarn, Steel legion and Death Korps of Krieg (and any other Imperial Guard model out there). You can even make your own out of bits from different ranges. All you've got to do is choose a particular flavour of Guard regiment. Cadians are the most widespread and financially viable however.

This probably sounds all very complex, so I'll try to give you a general rule to make it clear: Whenever you see the word 'Cadian', just replace it with 'Imperial Guard'.

Regarding your second question, you can indeed field an all-tank IG army. There are two types available - Armoured companies and armoured battlegroups. The former is a free army list that can be downloaded here. The latter is available only in Imperial Armour volume 1, available from Forge World. If you love Imperial tanks then I highly recommend this book.

Cheers mate i get what your saying. However while i understand now that when i see Cadia i just replace the word with Imperial Guard, I'm still unsure about Cadia Snipers though, because there so specialised it seems like only cadia would get them. It probably seems like I'm asking the same question twice but i don't want to buy a unit that i can't use. Anyhow thanks for the advice.

Remember that any miniature can be used to represent any unit so long as it looks the part and all weapons and equipment are represented on the model. That being so, the Cadian sniper models are not restricted to use in any given format. You can use them to represent sniper rifle equipped guardsmen in special weapon squads (the most obvious application), or in normal infantry squads if you're using the light infantry doctrine. Some people use them to represent ratling snipers. You could even chop off the scopes and use them as regular Guardsmen in infiltrating Veteran squads.

Cadian snipers are just Imperial Guard sniper models. How you use them is up to you; there is no prescribed application you must adhere to. If you can use them to represent a unit specified in an army list, then there's nothing stopping you. Just try to keep an open mind that the blister and boxed set descriptions do not dictate the use of the models themselves.

Uh...I feel I'm complicating this again. Cadian snipers are just normal Cadian models with sniper rifles, it's that simple. If you're collecting a Cadian army (which as I said is the most viable), then these guys are fielded in special weapon squads. You've got the codex right? If not, that should be your first purchase.
