Default Catachan Questions!

Hi, just bought a load of Catachans from my Gaming club manager and have a few questions which need answered:

What rules for catachans should i use?(doctrines or PDF from site?)

Is anything happening in next codex to affect what models i have?(I hear doctrines are getting destroyed)

Is the PDF file still legal?

Oh and some help about making lists would help.I'll list the rough amount of models i have

3 or so commanders
6 heavy flamers
6-9 snipers
At least 70 men(some with flamers,Sgts)
1 heavy weapon team

Any help will be appreciated

surprisingly, just as legal are the dark eldar still today, you are fine.

lets see

3 commanders? you might have your colonel or lieutenants already.

so far you have your HQ

and perhaps two platoon leaders,

your snipers?

9 death world veteran snipers should cover three elite slots. Be careful you might want to squeeze in devil officers, or veterans. 1-2 squads in low pt games would be dandy.

dont forget to try the idea of kroot.

add them as additional snipers, or counter assault.

This way you have shooting, and close combat.

although id give advanced warning that you're using non-standard rules since some people may not like it

I use deathworlders. For a few simple reasons.

Guardsmen are pretty much 6 points each for the vanilla squad. After doctrines are added they can become around 10 to 12 points if you go all out.

For 9 points a deathworld veteran get hardened fighter, a better jungle fighter and gain 1 extra initiative over a regular guardsmen.

A indoctrinated jungle fighter will on average be 10 points for the lesser boost.

Also. The codex is not legal at sanctioned tournaments unless specifically stated.

I totaly agree with JD although the only problem is they do not have better initiative but it is still a bargain compared to a normal upgraded guardsmen.

Dont know, since they have access to flamers, and powerfists, the WS 4 will come in handy.

The saves are mincemeat but most guard are mincemeat when hit.

They aren't effective in a standard game because they don't have enough heavy firepower, but God help whoever faces them on a jungle board.

I beg to differ. Whilst generally unstoppable in the jungle, they can bring to bear a similar amount of fire power to normal guardsmen. Simply without lascannons. Whilst the next best thing is melta you have to get close so that leaves the missile launcher. I have no problem in taking missile launchers, in fact i think they are better than lascannons. Now this isn't a debate on which is better that is just my opinion.

I have bought 2500 points to a tournament (local one) and I came 2nd. Loosing one game, drawing 1 and winning 4 at various levels. Only one game had any decent amount of jungle on the table.

Whilst they do not have armor this just frees up more points for more heavy weapons and support squads. Hell even traps are often worth their weight in gold. Ever lined up several across a river that spans the board?

In the PDF Catachans don't have any vehicles other than the sentinel... That makes you a little weak on a standard table.
