Default Command squads, a few noob questions :D

Hi all,

I'm almost done painting my first Infantry Platoon, haven't touched the command unit though. I purchased the HQ Squad box - is that the right units to be leading the platoon? Should I use the whole squad or just particular units from it?

Next question, as far as models go, how do I distinguish between Junior and Senior officers, and Heroic officers and whatnot? Are they different models, or is it purely a stats thing.

Thanks guys!

Hi,

The Games Workshop produced command squad is not a very good kit. The Officer model is fine, but the rest of the set-up is a little lacking. Usually, most people try to specialize their command squads for what they accomplish, but the regimental standard, master vox and meltagun really throws that mindframe off.

Most people plunder the command squad models to fill in their other squads, and convert other models to fill in their command squads. I would suggest you not use the Command Squad box models to be your platoon command squad. Command squads offer a lot of opportunity for conversions, so why not use that opportunity?

There is no real way to distinguish between the different types of officers, but some people paint them differently (i.e. gold trim for heroic senior officers, silver for anyone else) but personally, I just remember what models represent what officer.

Cheers,

AC

I give junior officers a brown uniform, and senior officers a black uniform. Very simple, and it makes them easy to pick out.

For me I've got the Baneblade Commander model as my HSO, and the fluff represents that.

Power weapon and bolt pistol, looks sweet it does.

Oh okay, so these units aren't any particular models then? That's great . I've actually spent alot of time with my first 20 Guardsmen playing with some unique poses and stuff and there's a few models who are ready for a promotion :P.

So my next question - Generally, should I be filling out my Platoon HQ squad in a particular way? My current Troops Platoon contains the HQ Squad, a Shock Trooper Squad, and an Armored Fist Squad. In a small (500 points) battle, what would you suggest the HQ squad for this platoon consist of?

A shooty Platoon HQ Command Squad should have:
Junior Officer
- Bolter
2 x Guardsmen with Plasmagun
Heavy Bolter

That's the normality for static IG amry

you did buy a HQ command squad and a second infantry squard right? cause a infantry platoon is a command squad and 2-5 infantry squads. An Armored fist squad is a second troops choice, not part of an infantry platoon.

Okay, this part worries me a bit. An armoured fist squad is not part of an infantry platoon, but is it's own Troops choice in the Force Organization Chart.

Each platoon will have a minimum of two shock trooper squads. (and the obligatory command squad)

I recommend keeping platoon command squads cheap. I generally give mine a autocannon and because it's a small squad (low model count) I just squeeze it in cover and take pot shots all day.

Cheers.

2 x Infantry Squad
