Default Starting guard, interested in a Mechanised force.

So today i picked up the Imperial Guard codex, and had a flick through it,reading the fluff(which i found suprsingly short!) and the doctrine system.

What stood out was the Mechanised doctrine.
I really like the idea of having most of my guys packed into Chimera's,ready to re-deploy and race to objectives.

I need help deciding what i should use in the army. And please bear in mind this will be my first Guard army, and i'm finding the list a little more complex then your average marines!

What other doctrines work well with mechanised?
For an infantry Platoon,do all 2-5 squads have to take a chimera each,or just one squad of the platoon?

I will be facing Tyranids as my main opponent! :-X
So how do Mech lists fare against the great devourer?

Any advice in general would be really helpful,so thanks for reading! ;D

Also if anyone knows of any pictures of other Mechanised armies, please shar them with me!

You'll have to put every infantry unit in a Chimera, so that every unit that can enter a Chimera has one.
The minimum amount of Chimera's a legal army has using standard FOC tables is 7. (Command HQ, 2 Command Sections, 4 Squads (Two per platoon)
The following isn't really a list, per se, but its a rough idea of what was in Codex: Armageddon, which I suggest you purchase if you have any interest in a Mechanized Imperial Guard Army.
Its a standard Imperial Guard line company, with two attachments.

Headquarters

Command HQ
Heroic Senior Officer
Power Sword
Refractor Field
Trademark Item
4 troopers
1 Plasmagun
1 Grenade Launcher

Commissar
Power Sword
Bolt Pistol

Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter

Troops

1st Platoon
Command Section
Junior Officer
Bolt Pistol
Power Sword
4 troopers
1 Grenade Launcher
1 Missile Launcher
Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter
Squad A
1 Sergeant
Laspistol
CCW
9 troopers
1 Lascannon
1 Plasma Gun
Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter
Squad B
1 Sergeant
Laspistol
CCW
9 troopers
1 Heavy Bolter
1 Grenade Launcher
Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter

2nd Platoon

Command Section
Junior Officer
Bolt Pistol
Power Sword
4 troopers
1 Grenade Launcher
1 Missile Launcher
Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter
Squad C
1 Sergeant
Laspistol
CCW
9 troopers
1 Lascannon
1 Plasma Gun
Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter
Squad D
1 Sergeant
Laspistol
CCW
9 troopers
1 Heavy Bolter
1 Grenade Launcher
Chimera
Multi-Laser
Heavy Bolter

Fast Attack

Hellhound Flame Tank
Rough Terrain Mechanism

Heavy Support

Leman Russ Battletank
Sponson Heavy Bolters
Hull Mounted Lascannon

*All underlined Units count as one slot on the FOC

Theres a solid list. Keep in mind, when playing mechanized, you can't take an Armoured Fist Squad to fill a Troops Slot, you must take two platoons, which you see makes 7 Chimeras at the very least.

Stormtroopers (if they don't Deepstrike), Ogryns, Hardened Veterans, and Heavy Weapons squads also must take Chimeras.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

yeah Stankov that list is still legal.

you'll have 4 more doctrines you can choose though.

For you other doctrines, consider Close Order Drill, though you won't want to actuially fight tryanids in close combat, when you deploy from your Chimera's you might have to deploy them base to base anyhow, and its free. Also consider Chem Inhalers or Iron Disciplene and Die Hards for leadership boosts.

Why can't you take one Armoured Fist as the second troops choice? The only requirement to take one platoon for each Armoured Fist Squad. So, you would only need Five Chimeras to fill out the required choices (HQ + Platoon HQ + 2 Infantry Squads + Armoured Fist Squad).

that's right it only says that every unit has to have a chimera. AFS come with a chimera so yes you can make a list wit only 5

Actually, only Guard Infantry units must take a Chimera. So Storm Troopers and Ogryns DON'T have to take a Chimera. Though Veterans and Heavy Weapons do (not sure how effective Chimera mounted HW would be...).

Also Armoured Fist squads do count as a troops choice, so it is perfectly legal to have a platoon and AF.

Now that I think of it, Conscripts don't need a Chimera either. So it's quite possible to field a lot of infantry amongst your vehicles.

I just had a mental picture of the rules nightmare that it would be to try and mount an conscript platoon in a chimera. The only thing I could think off would be that the chimera ran in a squadron after the conscripts embarked.

If you want to go cheap, remember that by taking grenadier doctrine you can effectively field stormtrooper squads as infantry FOC slots.

So you take mechanized and grenadier doctrines.

HQ selection and chimera

up to 6 squads that look like this:

10 stormtroopers with one or two assault weapons + chimera

Hellhound in fast attack
Leman Russ in heavy

So...

SO + 4 w/CCW & laspistol in chimera

3 grenadier squads with flamer and plasma in chimeras

2 hellhounds

3 leman russ

Everyone is in a track, and you have 4 chimeras, 2 hounds and 3 lemans or 9 vehicles

Anyway, something to consider...

However, remember that once a grenadier, your infantry may not take any of the doctrines that keep you in the fight such as iron dicipline, close order drill, and harden fighters. These doctrines are for normal infantry only. :-\

I like the sound of this,it will be both cheaper on my wallet and i really like the stormtroopers.
So I'll have ago at a few lists, and post them when i have settled on one i like.
Cheers!
