Default Special Forces

Unlike my previous topic. My friend took my idea of an airborne IG and so I change my to a Special Forces unit. I chose the Green Berets. Anyone have any doctrine choices and any suggestions let me know.

Well considering that IG are stock standard fighting men... A special forces unit is more likely to be in a game of kill team.

Read your codex, i'm sure you will find doctrines to use.

Well, you can't get much more Special Forces than Grenadiers.

Id say the following

Drop troops- HALO jumping
Light infantry- recon abilities
Special weapon teams- small weapons that pack a punch, perfect for recon
Veterans- highly skilled recon teams
Grenadiers- run of the mill special force units

I recommend NOT using the Imperial Guard Codex for a Special Operations Unit.

It's better to use the Daemonhunter or Witchhunters Codexes, because they can take 6 full squads of Storm Troopers, with a really good looking armoury.

Plus, the Inquisitors and their staff could be used as a "count as" Command Squad. Plus, IIRC, Daemonhunters Inquisitors can buy Hellguns.

But why? Hellguns are S3 & cost twice as much as a bolter.

Anyways, I agree that SF would be more kill team than regiment. Rangers would deploy in large numbers but Special Forces are more small bands that work behind enemy lines or with friendly indigenous people. Vets would be an excellent doctrine to represent the small teams working in various places while Storm Troopers fit more with elite shock troops like Rangers or Marines.

As a side note, you can have 6 Storm Trooper squads in IG. You take 2 Inquisitional Storm Trooper squads from one =][= codex & a third one from the other codex (example 2 DH ISTs & 1 WH IST). Its legal & you don't have to use a second doctrine point to get the Storm Troopers along with Grenadiers.

I'd agree that Veterans or =][= stormtroopers would represent Special Forces the best. Generally, veteran units (i.e. SEALS, Delta Force...) would want to remain stealthy. Veteran squads with their lighter armour (compared to the carapace of stormtroopers) would seem much more appropriate.

Also, veterans can take three special weapons, while stormtroopers can only take two. :P

If only there were SAWs and SMAWs as special weapons...

Why? It is more a matter of look than gameplay. Maybe because my armies tend to be very "fluffy".

Well for special weapons definatly buy demo charges because various jobs like special forces weapon sergeant or special forces engineer sergeant are both highly skilled in raids, sabatage, and exsplosive devices.
