Default House Rule - Las Gun Settings

right i reckon that in 40k you should be able to tell the IG squads to set their weapons to a set strength like in the 40K Literature.

i propose that each squad buys a certain kind of Las gun for (say 3 pts extra) that allows you to alter the settings of the gun.

High Power - Single shot, strength 3 ap 5

Low Power - Double shot , strength 3, ap -

Mid power -(normal shot)

and your squad can set its setting once a turn (so say the squad comes up against a squad of Marines, it could fire on high power, and fire 10 ap 5 strength 4 shots which will hurt the marines a bit more than a lower power shot of 2 shots and strength 3

see where im going?

i understand that the stats might not be overly great, but that is because i don't have the codex.

so essentially, the high power is like a hell gun shot, the middle is normal and the lower is one ST lower than normal, but can fire two shot instead of 1

make sense?

It makes sense in principle, but you really need a codex before you can attach strength and AP values. For instance, 'High power' is not the same as a hellgun; it's the same as a bolter! I don't think you can get away with making lasguns more powerful than hellguns. And it certainly wouldn't be as effective against marines as twice the number as shots at strength 3. It'd only be useful against GEQs. Also note that 'low power' makes 'mid power' redundant on account of the fact that normal shots are taken with the same stats as 'low power' anyway, albeit with the rapid fire rule. You really need to know the rules before you can start tampering with them.

Seeing as this is a house rule, it really ought to go in the "House Rules" section. Also, I reckon it should be like this if used:

High power: same as a Hellgun
Mid power: normal
Low power: same as a Shotgun

The option to take a "Preferred Lasgun setting" could be a very fluffy doctrine for a regiment... :P

Not all the IG regiments use the same megathule (?) power range, you know...

But the Strength system that 40k uses is so abstract that it encompasses all different makes of lasguns. Think of an Ork and a Guardsman. They're both S3, but in the background and Ork can rip a human limb from limb with his bare hands.

Legio is exactly right. The difference between S3 and S4 is huge, and the changes you'd have to make to a lasgun to make it that strong would make it not a lasgun at all really. An arbitrary increase in strength works okay for weapons that are already extremely high strength (8+) but when you're dealing with small arms carried by troops a single increase makes them vastly more powerful than their previous incarnation.

If you wanted to use something from Necromunda as your inspiration you could allow the Guard Units to equip themselves with hotshot power packs (say about 3 pts per model). In necromunda these increased the strength but also drmatically increased the chance of the fun overheating/exploding

so you could have: Range 24" Str 4 Ap - Special Rules: Rapid Fire, Gets Hot!

My subtle diagram disagrees with you.
your "subtle" diagram contains Optimus Prime and Proffessor Farnsworth, it's heresy in it's own right!
Any similarities between your reality and mine are purely coincidental...

Hotshot packs wouldn't get hot, as it basically just drains all the power with a few shots. A hotshot pack would make it about equal with a Hellgun, so S3 AP5. I'd also say maybe assault 1 to represent to bigger drain on the pack.
