Default Xeno fighters doctrine

I have a game coming up with a friend, with my Imperial Guard against his Tyranids. I am probably going to include Xeno-Fighters as one of my Doctrines, for obvious reasons. I am lucky to have a friend who does not cares about fluff and we will both be trying our hardest to engineer our armies to win.

Anyway, my question is:

Knowing you are facing a particular race, is it frowned upon to select Xeno-Fighters just for that particular opponent?

I have never cared much for fluff myself, but I would like to hear from those who do.

Tailoring your army to fight a particular army is frowned upon by those who care for fluff. For competition it is frowned upon as power gaming.

In match against a mate where he is doing it too? Who cares

I think if you look at the Xeno-fighters entry you will see that it says this doctrine MUST be represented on the models (trophy's etc) and may not be switched to suit the opponent you face! Now i haven't got the codex with me at the moment but im sure the wording is fairly similar. As for tailoring the rest of your army to face your opponents, I don't see a problem with it as long as he's doing the same!

Yes it would. I believe the words in the codex concerning this practice are: 'It is completely unacceptable'.

If it is purely the tactical aspect of the hobby that interests you then I think you're overlooking a massive part of it as there is so much more to Warhammer 40k than rolling dice and moving models. But whatever, if that's all that appeals to you, that's your business. So long as your opponent is of the same mind then what does it matter how unfluffy your army is? But know this; what you're talking about is powergaming in its purest form. Merely selecting doctrines as 'upgrades' is frowned upon, but swapping the nature of the xenos fighters doctrine to match your next opponent is the sort of despicable powergaming that will ruin games with a large proportion of hobbyists you will meet.

Buddy, read the entry again. Games Workshop is doing everything in their written power to prevent people from switching the Xeno Fighter doctrine.

Also, you're playing your friend - a tyranid player. Firstly, do you really want to be in close combat anyway to use your 3+ advantage. Secondly, this guy is your friend, when I play against my friends I'm not worried about winning, I just want to have a good time.

Yeah you're right, it doesn't say 'completely unacceptable' at all...just 'absolutely unacceptable'. That's completely different... :

As specified in the codex, there must be some manner of visual representation that identifies your troops as specialised in fighting a given race. Look, you can ask the same question as many times as you like, but you're not going to get a different answer. As Krez so rightly pointed out, Games Workshop have made it as clear as they possibly can that such practice is 'absolutely unacceptable'. We too, as gamers, consider it to be utterly contemptible. Do you need flashing lights or a siren to make it sink in?

[move][glow=red,2,300]Swapping your 'Xenos hunters' specialisation to match your opponent is POWERGAMING[/glow][/move]

P.S. - In case you didn't realise, powergaming is generally unappreciated. All clear now?

Well, since you're saying that your soldiers carry all kinds of trophies, the only acceptable solution from my point of view is to select all three xeno-fighters doctrines and use them every time. That way you'll don't have to 'switch', sorry, cheat.
