Default Ratling Questions.

Hey guys, so the time has come to ask you all for some info as I can't seem to find it for myself..

Here it is:

a) Where do Ratlings come from? Do they have one homeworld, or are there many?

b) If there are many... What are the conditions that produce Ratlings?

Thanks.

simply put they are mutants

ratlings and orgyns are both types of mutants but because they are a fairly stable (meaning there are a lot of them and the are not random mutations) the are just constidered a sub species of human.

Because of their psychical traits they are used in the imperial guard

I was under the impression they were more human than anything. just due to planetary conditions they developed as well... hobbits...

They're ABhumans, not SUBhumans. It is a big difference.

I would figure that Ratlings are just what we call midgets, and Ogryns are mongoloids, so both would just show up at random on human planets.

From Rogue Trader (yes the original game):

Ratlings were called "Halflings- Homo Sapiens Minimus": Halflings are the smallest of all ABhumans-their ancestors having become stunted by thousands of years of inbreeding upon worlds with naturally soporific climates and abundant harvests.

Ogryns- Homo Sapiens Gigantus: On many worlds the human stock has mutated into larger, bulkier, but less intelligent form. This is especially common on high gravity worlds.

No sense mentioning the other abhumans; beastmen, squats. They've all been read out of or eliminated in newer game versions.

Finally, on Abhumans: Abhumans are creatures evolved from human stock, but changed or mutated to a greater or lesser degree. They differ from ordinary mutans in that they conform to recognisable physical standard, breed true, and are no more prone than normal humans to further mutation.

Other random wtf stuff from early RT and 2nd edition:

Ogryns are among the largest and most powerful of the Abhuman breeds yet discovered- only the Minotaurs, a strain of beastman, can match them for sheer destructive power.

Halfings, the smallest Abhuman breed, are known by a variety of names througout the Imperium, but the name that has passed into common usage within the bulk of the Imperial Guard is Ratlings.

Ratlings have many homeworlds, one of them was attacked by the Nightlords Chaos Legion under Abaddon's orders at the start of the Gothic Sector War to steal one of the two Eldar artifcts for activating the Blackstone Fortresses - it was either the Hand of Darkness or the Eye of Night.
