Hello all,
I am a Tau player who has been interested in Imperial Guard for a while but still loved my Tau. So I postponed starting IG. Then i found Vassal. So now I am probably going to buy the codex and try it out there and see if i like them. So now I would like to ask, what do you guys like about guard and would a grenadier army fit with the Gue'vesa fluff? Also is my plan to test on vassal viable or do i really need to buy the models to get the feel for them?

(rap) Rolling up 'cos I'm a Space Marine, Heavy armour so it ain't hard to be seen, I ride, ride and they see me lean, Soritas and a TV screen, Yeah the Canoness, she likes cola, Mixed in a stolen drone controller, But then I just try to hold her, One smack and great, I'm in a coma |

A huge part, possibly the biggest part, of 40k is the aesthetics. If you don't like your models there's really no point collecting that army. You could win every game, but honestly, if you're not enjoying the spectacle, what's the point? So many gamers these days approach the hobby with the mindset of 'How do I win?' rather than 'How do I enjoy this?'. So in short, testing army lists on VASSAL is viable, but you won't know if an army is really for you until you actually paint up some of its miniatures and use them in games.
What I like about guard is that I can associate with them better than other armies. I used to be a soldier so for a while I wondered whether it was because I have first hand experience with warfare and the intricities of living in the field, but I have since concluded that we can all associate with Guard better than other races because we all know what it is to be human. They're mere men in a universe full of marauding aliens, ancient and terrible 'magic', and giant superhuman soldiers! Maybe the appeal is greatest in those that cheer for the underdog? Besides the initial appeal for vanilla Guard, there is also so much scope for customisation and themed armies; most of the IG range is based in some way on first/second world war stuff anyway, so adapting miniatures to represent current day or past armies is a real possibility. Just look at Col. Gravis' Praetorians for example! P.S. - 'Grenadiers' is practically a prerequisite for Gue'vesa...they have Tau equipment.

you could just use GWs doctrines.link http://us.games-workshop.com/games/4...unorthodox.htm
but I don't like some of the doctrines you could just as easily use carapace armor doctrine for the 4+ save sharpshooters to make them better shots die-hards to represent the the gue'vesa indoctrincation of the greater good iron disipline because their officers are well trained by the fire caste and either close order drill, hardened fighters, or special weapon squads for your last one

When I started 40k I went for Tau myself because of the thought of pounding my enemies from afar really appealed to me. And that is actually what led me to the guard. I find there are many things that lead me to the IG: tanks, artillery, defense, ogryns
and strength in numbers but what really drew me in is the static warfare and holding a position to the last man.All I can say is give it time, I learned that when I was trying to choose in between the eldar and the IG (I was leaning toward the eldar). But thinking about it now I still like the eldar (I almost bought a starter box) and even think about getting them as a second army. Even if I do get some eldar I will always prefer my guardsmen since they are the 40k army that appeals to me the most and I didn't know that in the first few days of deciding in between those two armies. |

To Tom: I like the way imperial guard look thats also one of the reason I chose them. Also I just wanted to get the feel for certain units so i know what i want to buy.
To Johny Boy: I was set on using grenadiers as a doctrine but im not sure which others to use. I won't decide till I get the codex though those sound like osme of the ones I'll most likely use. To Twisted: funilly enough i also was considering eldar but finaly chose IG.

Grenadiers would be an interesting choice and it would do well. But I ask this much; attempt to convert up some of them instead of using kaskrins.
Good luck to you. Vassal will get you started on tactics, but also consider playing with paper proxies against a real army- this way you get real life experience.
