Default New Guard Player-- Help Wanted :)

Hey everyone!

Well my birthday and christmas are nearing, so I decided I'm going to start a new army. I've always wanted to do guard, and bought the codex. but always got away from them because of other projects.

So I'm here asking a few questions, but I geuss I should state my idea first. I wan't to do an all infantry hoard army, and I want to have a zombie based army.

So my questions are:

1) How many las guns come in the Cadian box? (including ones without arms)

2) What docterines should I look at taking for a zombie hoard army? (fluff and tactic wise)

3) Any general tips for a new guard player/ Hoard guard player?

Thanks in advance (hopefully).

All the best wishes on your new project

1) Only 20. Sorry

2) Zombie based? Well that's easy, I hope you'll find my thoughts appaling
- Chem Inhalers
A good upgrade, and a must to stay in fluff. Fought a 6k battle against IG using them - they were very difficult to break... You have to kill them all to get rid of them. This will bump point cost up a bit, but if you won't take any other costly doctrines, your horde will be still massive enough.
- Drop Troops
They're burrowing from beneath the earth, right? Cool, fluffy, powerful and absolutelly free. And frees the deployment space up, so vital to horde armies. Just remember that the simple fact that every unit CAN deep strike, doesn't mean that you MUST deepstrike
- Ogryns
You'd need some elites, and only Ogryns seem fluffy to me - undead monsters, right? Just buy WHFB ogres, they are cheaper, immensely easier to convert, and will look better as big fat zombie beasts. They are a quite powerful CC unit, especially when amassed. Just never attack anything with a 2+ save, and avoid combat with 3+ save, especially if some of them have power weapons.
- Conscripts
More meat! I am not sure if they can use Chem Inhalers, but if they can, go for it all the way! Field a hundred of them Won't be able to deepstrike, but they do have other uses.
- Rough Riders
Why not, cheap and flexible, fast unit. More fluffy than sentinels/hellhounds for your theme.

well, if you want a zombie theme, look at EOT codex under plauge zombies.

as for doctrines, i would use orgryns, die hards, conscripts, warrior weapons, and maybe close order drill to simulate mobs of zombies.

Alright, thanks for the replys guys.

I think I've decided on what doctrines I'm going to use.

-Ogryns
Big zombies, yay.

-Heavy Weapon Platoons
Incase I ever need a Heavy support to fill out, and looks like it could be helpfull in a hoard army.

-Chem inhailer
* * More of a "Counts as". Shows how mindless the zombies are, and how they will keep going at the enemy and not fall back.

-Drop Troops
Shows how some zombies could be awaked by the battle, and come up to join the fight?

-Close Order Drill
As Gorcyca said, shows the "mobbyness" of the zombies. Leadership boost could show the stupidness of the zombies, and how they won't run from threatning situations.

Thanks again for the comments, really helped me make up my mind, though if you really think I should change something, please post, as I'm always open to different views/opinions, as long as you give a reason along with it.

i dont really think HW platoons is all that fluffy when it comes to zombies. maybe you should look for somthing a little less mechanical...

Yea I do see your point.

I want to stay away from conscripts - as fluffy as it would be, I would have to shell oout extra cash for the conversions and stuff, and I don't have the needed extra cash.

Well how about something like special weapon teams, that would replace the anti tank that the heavy weapon teams would provide, or anti infantry (Flamers and such), and they are a little less mechanical than heavy weapons.

its 200 bloody pounds! $400 US!

I think he should get started and make sure he likes his choice before spending $400 on something he might not like.

... And 500 canadian!

I was looking at the set and as tempting as it is, I've decided not to. Why? Well...

I'd have to buy alot of zombie boxes ontop of it, the way I'm making the army it shoudl come out to alot less than 500, if I did buy the box alot of models would go to waist, I have no need for 18 heavy weapon squads, thats 54 heavy weapons, and I'm not planning on using even a quarter of that.

Also, it would really limit conversion possibilitys if I didn't spend more money on the zombie boxes, and convertings half the fun! Plus I think it'll be a bit easier to ask for 45 doller boxes for b-day/christmas rather than a 500 doller box.

I do thank you though for bringing that to my attention, I seriously considered it before and if I would not have known about it I would have loved to see it!

For those who care, I'm working on an army list tonight and should beable to post it tomorrow (on the army list forum, of course).
