I would talk to Genmotty if I were you, he's rumored to have 516 IG.

I believe he has not yet produced pictures

The way I would do it would be this:

Grab a load of heavy weapon squads - give em the flavour fo choice.
Then take as many infantry plattoons as possible - kit them out with a special weapon - oh say, grenade launcher. Give the command sections a multimelta or two and take the drop troops doctrine for tank nuking.
If you have any points to spare pick up some stripped conscripts to throw at your enemies guns.

And there you have loads of men...

Not sure about the effectiveness - would be fun though.

I came up with a Infantry horde list one time never did it though
Don't remember the numbers but it had 5 Platoons 5 squad each with a single meltagun in each squad and one conscript platoon

it relied on the massive number of shots of the basic lasgun to take out troops and meltagun to bust tanks it would have been a very close range list

If you wanted to know I thought this up after a squad of guardsmen took out 3 Necron Wraiths in one turn (heavy bolter and plasma gun did nothing but lasguns took them down).

How true! I personally call it "wall of light" - sometimes you just can't take those 30 laser shots in your face, terminators or not.
This can be deadly, but fortunately (for us, IG enemies, that is) it's not too reliable. Definitely not something you can limit your tactics to... Especially against enemies with good long range shooting.

I would replace some (one-third?) of those meltas with flamers and plasmas for the command squads. And of course you'll need something to actually do the killing - I'd say a Heavy Weapons Platoon plus Heavy Mortar Battery? That way you'll avoid the tanks completely, rendering many highest-priced enemy weapons useless. In this scenario, you'll be able to field about 3 platoons, 3 squads of infantry each, in 1500 points limit plus a lot of heavy weapons. Ommiting heavy weapons, you can bump this up by another 3-5 squads... How would you deploy them, ah, that's another story

Another way is to field a sea of conscripts. Three smallest infantry platoons with some heavy weapons plus HQ plus 3 Comissars (of the Independent variety) will cost around 850 points, for the rest you'll be able to field 150 conscripts with flamers Now invite your enemy for the red harvest...

That was only one squad so 13 lasgun shots

Smirnov I never planed on doing this list it just something i came up with at random. It relayed on the massive amounts of guardsmen to soak up causalities and still get there with enough shots to hurt something. I wasn't going to have any special weapons but I need some anti tank firepower and if I put in plasmaguns and flamers my opponent could just take out the squads with meltas to protect their tanks and I couldn't do much about it. I'm pretty sure that this was not my entire list because it was a while ago i came up with it. Of course if I play against orks or nids I can just sit back the whole time.

There is no way that i could see myself playing this army cause it would never get painted

Good point Johnnyboy, but consider this: there is only so much squads that can attack one tank, especially on a really crowded table, so they can be destroyed anyway. My point is that even if everybody has melta gun, your enemy still has only to watch out for about a half of them, or maybe even small minority, if he puts his tanks in the corner in anticipation of horde-slaughtering.

I understand though that massed lasgun fire is supposed to make up for the lack of flamers and plasma guns. Still, the special weapons will increase your firepower substantially, while decreasing infantry numbers only by about 10%.

I must say I've never really played typical horde, but I have much experience in commanding massed infantry in large 3k+ battles. It is sad to say, but meltas or not, it is the heavy weapons that make the difference. And there is practical limit - when your deployment zone starts to get seriously overcrowded...

A interesting idea occured to me - mixing Horde philosophy with a Drop Troops doctrine... >

Well, I meant at least 2 squads. It's rather difficult to find just one separated squad to bully at any moment.

Not to mention it wouldn't be exactly entertaining, or flexible. Meltas and plasmas at least deprive your opponent from the comfort of painless tankshocking your troops, which is an important part of psychological warfare.

How very true! I remember our battles, where even I, Chaos Marines player, had some minor problems with maneuvering my vehicles on a really large table. Your battle lines looked like a Rolling Stones gig.
