Default Back to Guard: Starting Savlar Chem Dogs

Well, I've decided to start work on my Guard army before jumping into Chaos. I'm an old guard player for those who don't know. I haven't played them in 4th edition, though. After thinking about what type of force I wanted to field and going over the codex many times I decided on Savlar Chem Dogs. This choice was made easier with the release from PIP of alternate heads to easily model them!

I think the idea of a very mobile force suits the Chem Dogs well and I have a fairly good idea of how I want to build the army as well as the theme of the army. I want them to have desert theme as well as a rag-tag look to them. Think Mad Max only with commissars to keep them in line. The idea of modeling the sergeant or possibly just the commander as arbites is another idea I'm thinking about. They are criminals forced into service and having the squad leader be almost like lesser commissars seems really cool. I'm just stuck trying to decide if only the HQ should be represented as a squad of arbites leading the force or also have the sergeants modeled this way. Alternatively, I was thinking of having the sergeants represent gang leaders in a sense. The biggest baddest criminals keeping the squad in check on the front lines. So suggestions on this aspect of the force would be a big help.

As for building a mobile guard force, I want to have every infantry squad in chimeras. I will also be fielding alot of rough riders. I'm starting with 10 to work out the conversions and get the look right and once I've worked out the look I'll build the number to 30. I'll also be getting a squad(maybe 2) of Ogryns. Mainly because I love the new models and converting them will be alot of fun. They will also have a chimera. Having a highly mobile, almost an assault force will be a nice change of pace from the usual guard list as well as a very fun and themed army. They may not win all the time but I'm not really concerned with winning, just having fun.

Now, why every IG player plays guard. The tanks. I'm starting out with 3. I haven't decided if I'll get 2 Demolishers and a Leman Russ or 2 Lemans and a Demolisher. I think more Demolishers would fit better but I like to see what you fellow tread heads think. I'll of course be getting a baneblade when they are released but that's more for fun than an actual core unit for the army.

I think a unit of hardened veterans will be added as well. I want them to be the tough as nails criminals who've done far worse things to civilians than they have on the battlefield. The scum of the earth. They will be modeled accordingly.

As for infantry I'll be starting out with 3-4 squads in chimeras. They'll have heavy weapons squads but I want them to stay mobile so as much as I love mortars these guys will probably stick with autocannons or missile launchers.

I want at least one special weapons squad in transport to bring melta death to enemy vehicles but I may build this to 2 or 3 as the army grows.

I'll be ordering most of this tomorrow but I won't start building the army until I get more work done on my Marines. Hopefully this purchase will give me the motivation to finish the massive task that is my half company of Dark Templars.

Suggestions or comments would be a big help. My roommate is a big guard player so he's going to help me with building the force but more help is always welcome. Criticism is also welcome, I'd love to hear things that you think would work better or things I should add.

Ahh the Savlar, how I love them. Shining heroes, and an example to imperial citizenry? Hell no! These guys will steal anything that isn't nailed down! One thing I recomend on a modelling front. Make sure you have some equipment that has obviously been "aquired" from other regiments. I can just picture a Chem dog smirking as he lifts his missile launcher, complete with "property of Cadian 8th" sticker, up to fire

Hehe, I'm gonna use some SM and other weapons for some of them. Mostly special weapons. I'm getting a huge bag of kroot bits of ebay and I'm giving all the lasguns kroot barrel tips to make them look different from the standard issue lasgun. I think it's gonna be really cool.

Oh, and I just checked the online store for prices(although I'm ordering from warstore). I'll have enough to get 5 chimeras, 60 guardsmen, 3 demolishers/LRBTs and the 2006-2007 catalog and still have enough cash to go buy my desert table too! Tomorrow is gonna be a 40k shopping spree!

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

And if it is nailed down they'd steel the nails as well. :funny:
