Default "Mortar Combat!"

I'm sorry, but this question had to be asked, noobish as it is.

What is the significance of the phrase "Mortar Combat!" ? I've heard it mentioned several times before, and I'm a bit confused. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I think it's supposed to be word play of sorts. I gather the phrase "Mortal combat!" was a favourite from the game 'Mortal Kombat', or something like that. I don't really get it either, but I never really got into the series. :P

"Mortar Combat!", or more correctly "Mortar Kombat!" is indeed a pun on ther Mortal Kombat series.

The phrase refers to any Guard army with an inhuman amount of Indirect Fire weaponry, almost always made up of Forgeworld units. Examples include armies with nine Thudd guns, spewing a horrific thirty six Str 5 Ap 5 Blast Markers a turn. The other extreme is the nine Heavy Mortar army. Naturally, you can mix and match these all you want, subbing in standard Mortar squads into your HQ section, or including Griffons, Howitzers and so on.

OK, I'll explain. It is a play on shouting "Mortal Kombat". It's also what the dwarven mortar teams in Warcraft3 say when they're trained.

Fire 180 - Strength worth of artillery in a single turn, and "echo" is putting it lightly.

I am going to run my traitor guard (or russain god of war army)that way, omg and I simply rule on scatter dice (5/6 times I roll a hit but when it is armor saves I roll 1s and 2s). I like the sound of 50 morters going off a turn.

I'm wondering how may indirects can you have in a 2000pts army?

lots :

HQ
JO mortar 50
2 mortar squads 160

elites
vets 1 sarge 4 men and mortar 55

troops
JO mortar 50
squads with mortars x4 280

JO mortar 50
squads with mortars x2 140

JO mortar 50

JO mortar 50
squads with mortars x2 140

JO mortar 50
squads with mortars x2 140

heavy support
JO mortar 50
3 mortar squads 240

total 1990

29 mortars (must use veterans doctrine and heavy weps platoons)

The shortcomings of this list are obvious, anything with an armour value is laughing although anything on foot will be making many, many armour saves.
