Some of the downsides that I have noticed for Guard are a Low Leadership. So I generally throw in either Veteran Sergeants(good for low squad count) or vox castors(good for high squad count). Either that or I keep them close by my command squads. Another problem is the fact that a lot of army's basic weapons will tear through Guard body armor, two ways to offset that is high model count, and/or cover.

Some of the bonuses that I have noticed with the Guard is the fact that you can have a high model count, or a high vehicle count. They can put out more heavy weapons than every army. And with the Doctrine system you can have just about any fluff that you can possibly think of.

Hope that help you!

I have expeirience a huge amount of dificulty when playing against tyranids, they tend to only get a couple turns of shooting in before and entire army is in close combat, and from there everything falls apart.

In the hobbyist aspect their is an extremely large amount of possibilites for all the IG models. The only bad thing hobby wise with them is the fact that you have to paint large amounts of Guardsman which can get monotonous and tiring.

well... i had a big thing typed out but my internet messed up so ill just say this.

Pros- everything

cons- nothing

guardsmen can be outfitted to do absolutly anything for anyone. a bit of creative modelling will keep the massive amounts of models due for a paint job from seeming so boreing, and a bit of creative list writing will get a fun and original army to play with.

This made me think...

Pro- Deversity in the number and types of effective armies you can create using guard doctrines. (mechinised, ac, mixed, drop troop, conscript heavy, all infantry...and a lot more). Big guns, some times to the point of being overkill. Real tanks. Ability to take allies, but what self repecting guard army will hire Kroot? Guard rocks at high point games.

Con- A lot of rules in the guard dex that seem good for the gaurd will end up making the army weaker. (useless doctrines) Close combat for the most part, unless it's rough riders, ogrins or conscripts. Low mobillity for some guard armies. Guard is weakish at below 1000 point games. (unless you get crafty with some doctrines)

Guard rocks, I have no regrets chooing to play guard.

pro: lots of variety, so many different ways to trick out your force
con: tricking out your force tends to reduce your numbers advantage. but its always so tempting to try to make your army 'elite' even though the basic lasguard is mathematically the best approach. It's just so tedious though, in the modelling aspect, in the 1 hour long move phase aspect. mathematically we can destroy pretty much any other army, but the upgrade options and so on really tempt you because everyone who puts time into their models wants them to be special. ech... it's like a constant balancing act between fluff and cheese.

Right....

Pros:
- Mass bodies
- The possiility to feild huge amounts of heavy weapons
- A GREAT variety of armour choices
- Longest ranged weapon in the game system (Earthshaker with indirect)
- Mass Lasguns
- Balenced costs
- Possibility for some serious and great conversions
- Doctrines
- Can be allied by =I= units

Cons:
- Mass bodies = mass painting
- Low armour saves
- Limited doctrine choices

All i can think of right now
