Default H.S.O's & S.O's - Brains or Braun?

Heya,

I've always wondered how Imperial Guard players represent their H.S.O's or S.O's. Do you see them as bad ass Rambo wannabe's kicking every warped spawned maniac where the sun don't shine?

Or do you see you H.S.O's or S.O's as intellectual men, who sit at the back lines and bark orders down the vox?

Please, inspire me?

I hate to say it but I use my officers as throw away suicide squads armed with plasma death. There are only 5 in a squad and I play a mechanized force which means unless dismounted I am immune to leadership checks and secondly I can take a squad of 10 guardsmen with a vet sgt and close order drill which gives me a ld of 9 which is equal to a HSO and superior to a SO and a JO.

Officers in my opinion are meant to deal with the biggest threat coming at your army. The fact they can take 5 plasma weapons can ruin a marine players or a Tyranid monstrous creatures day very quickly with 10 rapid firing plasma shots. Sure I might overheat and die but for a cost of 80 points I can bring down pontentionally 2 to 3 times the squads point value. Not to mention the squad is a non-scoring unit so keeping it alive to capture something is pointless

I didn't know that. Why are they non-scoring?

[hr]

My officers are Elysian drop troops, so I think it's fitting that they are non-glamorous fighting men first and foremost...kinda like the officers from Band of Brothers I guess. I don't want mine to be superheros, nor callous generals throwing men's lives away as they see fit, I just want mine to be leaders.

The squad has no points value, only the character does.

The character is an independent character with a retinue so he can't score.

The squad members come free with the officer, but the unit itself is not an IC. It still costs X points and only one model is an independent character. I don't understand why retinues are discounted, does it say that somewhere in the rulebook?

Nope a space marine squad is counted.

The reason a guard command squad isn't is because its a free squad.

Actually thinking about it further it is indeed a scoring unit, so in Alpha level missions it can take and contest objectives. In gamma and omega level games it can contest objectives, but it is worth 0 points.

The points cost of the models in the squad is included in the cost of the guy leading the squad due to the way the guard codex is written.

This is because its a 3rd ed codex, not a 4th ed one.

A IG command squad is an officer with a free squad. They are not a retinue, the squad is not a scoring unit

When looking at scoring units in the back of the BGB it says an IC with a retinue and a transport is considered 3 separate units for scoring purposes.

1) The Character NOT a scoring unit
2) The Squad YES if above 50% NO if below 50%
3) The Transport NOT a scoring unit

The JO, SO, HSO is an officer with a free squad and is NOT a scoring unit. The officer cannot choose to leave his command squad like another character can. He is attached to it until he is all by himself at which point he becomes a IC

Well I have an opinion of neither Brains or Braun. Simply the callous leader who marches behind the troops shouting encouragement into a vox caster, or hid below in some bunker directing fire and reenforcement.

On the table top I genrally use my HQ as a counter assault unit just behind the forward troopers, they hardly ever die, but give that important Ld boast when you really need it. See IG commanders don't look flashy at all and so can easily hide amidst your troops if they aren't dealing death everywhere.

HSO's are Heroic SOBs so their the groin kickers
while SO's have yet to prove themselves as a$$ kickers so they stick to stratagy and thoughfulness.

I have a HSO thats got a storm bolter, and is screaming his head off!
