OK ok ok ok ok. My birthday is coming up, and I wanted to start a guard army. Heres what I wanted to get.

1. Cadiens and chimera-$50
2. Cadien Lt. or commisar-$10

Is the Chimera a seperate troop choice, or does it have to be in an Amoured Fist squad?

The chimera has to go with an armoured fist squad. it is part of that troop choice.

You need at least one Platoon of Guardsmen before you can take an Armoured Fist, so I'd start there.

Mechanised simply means that everyone needs a Chimera, so you would still need to take a normal platoon, then givem them all Chimeras, then take an Armoured Fist.

ouch. OK, no chimera then. How bout some Tanith for a cheap troop choice? + some cadiens?+ some LTs. or a Commisar?

Ok , I got my guard platoon. Now a codex and a chimera may be coming up, too with no cost to me(BEST FRIEND AMERICANWARMONGER! YOU DA BEST! )

So whats next? LT.? Commisar? more free gifts from my friend?

Tanith aren't "cheap" troops. They are more expensive (both money wise and points wise) than normal Guard. I wouldn't reccomend mixing regiments like that.

For a basic army, you need:

A Command Officer (JO, SO or HSO) plus his 4-man retinue.

A Platoon Officer (JO) plus his 4-man retinue.
2 10-man squads.

an Armoured Fist.

That is the basic army. Note that you could swap the Armoured Fist for another Platoon if you want to, or even use Conscripts/Grenadiers. Get the basics, then buy a Russ.

He's got it exactly.. fill your compulsory choses adn then get a Leman Russ.. they are incredible... after that comes the place where you get to make it your own.. Personally I got what has been mentioned and then started working toward a close quarters force by including some sentinels (ne with a Heavy Flamer), A Hellhound and 2 Demolishers... but you can do whatever you want... just fill those requirments first!
