Default Mobile Artillery

Well, when considering what to take for my Guard army I've been considering attaching a Chimera to a Heavy Weapons Squad armed with mortars. If I read the Chimera's rules right this should alllow me to treat it as an open topped vehicle and fire the mortar from inside of it. I'm planning on parking this thing behind cover at the start of the game and use it as a poor man's self proppelled artillery piece and move it when the area gets a little hot, or it needs a better shot.

Anyways, has anyone else had this same brainwave? If so how effective have you found it to be in various battles?

IIRC Chimeras are dedicated transports...

Chimeras do have weaponry, and the rule stating someone can fire a weapon from inside the transport is on page 45 of the new codex, I believe.

I am not sure what you're thinking of here... the only way to attach Chimeras to Heavy Weapon Squads is to use the Mechanised Doctrine... and even then, you'd have two Mortars sat idle.

If you want to do this, use an Armoured Fist. However, it's a waste of points to be honest. The Chimera is much better off fighting "head on", rather than acting as a pretend-artillery weapon. If you want to try this, go buy a Griffon; for less than the cost of a Chimera, you'll be getting a dedicated siege mortar.

I use mortars every game, and three stationary mortars are much better than one "mobile" mortor. If deployed right they would be last die in your army. If your opponent has gotten you mortar team in cc then you lost the game a long time ago ;D

There's an easier way to do this. Centaur artilery trailers!

Since they're open topped a heavy mortar team can fire while embarked. Then if enemies get close you can drive away, deploy the mortar squad on the far side of the centaur and continue to fire in the next turn!

You'll have to use one of these two heavy artillery squads though:

Heavy Mortars and Thudd guns are classed as 'artillery' and the mortars are towed around rather than loaded onto the vehicles, so you couldn't fire from within it. Not sure why you'd want to really, what with Centaurs being so feeble; you'd probably be safer outside. :-\

Nothing wrong with using the Centaur to block line of sight though (and whisk away the mortar crew when things get hairy). You might as well just use a Chimera in such a fashion though; there's nothing wrong with mounting up and driving away if you want to reposition. However, I can't think of a situation when you might want to do that; mortars don't need line of sight (in fact it is best if they are hidden) and as arcadiabulldog pointed out, if your mortar squad is in danger of getting assaulted then you've already lost.

Tom there's nothing that stops heavy mortars from firing while hitched up.

Models embarked in an open topped vehicle may fire.
Centaurs are open topped.
A heavy mortar + crew is a model.

The idea was that you'd have the mortar + crew embarked and hidden out sight. If anyone tries to come in to dig you out you spend one turn moving away and disembarking. Then the next turn you can wallop them again if they're not within you're minimum range.

Barrage weapons cannot be fired on the move. A Griffon can't move and shoot, so a towed mortar wouldn't be able to either.

Unless the vehicle didn't move that turn. I'm not suggesting you move and shoot, I am suggesting you shoot while embarked so that if you ever have to make a quick getaway you can quite easily.
