THE MILITIA: doctrine

as a troops choice, this regiment may take squads of 5 infantry with hardened veteran statlines, but no infiltration, or heavy weapons options. They cost the same as regular infantry, but are always armed with shotguns, 1 special weapon per squad bought with normal cost. The sergeant is armed and statted identically to the rest of the squad and does not get wargear picks like a normal 'hardened-veteran-sergeant'.

we played a game with this idea, and 3 squads of 5 shotgunners per side +1 command squad with a heavy bolter... we played this through this afternoon and it was so furious and cool.

I reckon militia would be likely to use autoguns as well, which I believe have the same statline as lasguns for game purposes. But this seems like a good idea.

You could represent Militia as Conscripts.

"Militia are in no way, shape or form a military unit. Imperial forces only use Militia in the most dire situations. Militia are usually conscripted Gang members, miners, workers, labourers etc... Militia also have little training, and as such are no match for Imperial Guardsmen. But what Militia lack in skill they make up with numbers."

So, it is much easier to use the Conscripts doctrine, because Militia in all effects are just Conscripts.

I have no idea why you'd want Veterans for your Militia... most of the time, Militia are civilians (making them Conscript-y), and armed with nothing but a mix of weapons from hunting rifles to pitchforks.

I agree. Perhaps consripts with the option of either a lasgun (autogun) or laspistol (autopistol) and CCW (pitchfork, burning torch, big knife etc)?

You could take Conscripts, you could add the odd autogun here and there, autoguns in all respects are the same as lasguns. And if you want auto/laspistols and all manner of C.C.W's, take the Warrior Weapons doctrine.

LOL! I can just see it now, the Emperor's champion getting overrun and dragged down by a legion of pitch fork wielding peasants. What an inglorious death.

"Ok, 4's to hit and the sergeant's board-with-a-nail-in-it counts as a power weapon."

a good point... but we were thinking more along the lines of a bunch of guys who own way too many guns and have nothing to do but hang out in the sticks and fire off their gun collections to impress each other (probably while drinking a bunch of beer) so hence the BS4... they may be kind of hick-ish but they all know how to shoot.

Hehe...one would hope the Imperial Guard marksmanship training is a little more sophisticated than getting drunk and shooting at bottles and tin cans.

No, they probably get drunk and shoot grots & the like, for moving target practice.
