Shotguns. Don't we just love 'em. Except in 40K. It seems that with their general low stats they have been downgraded to a short-ranged assault flashlight. Although there are a few shotguns that are quite good at piercing armour the weedy AP value I can understand, as well as the titchy range, but why such a low strength? Shotguns can literally blow an unarmoured opponent to bits at close range, hence their clicheed use in zombie films. At least give them +2 strength at half range or something, as at the moment I wouldn't give one to a grot.

I LOVE shotguns in 40k, I've killed BLOODTHIRSTERS with them. I just like them overall.

I am quite the fan of shotguns as well.
Got a Catachan Kill-Team filled with the buggers.
I also use them on my Adeptus Arbites and Hardened Veterans.
From what I hear out in the void, the shotguns for Dark Angels scouts will be
str 4! (And I hope the same for all shotguns in the future.)

Okay, let's just clarify something here:

Got that? Okay, now to expand on the idea.

Breaking it down:
Range: Is fine as it is, a Shotgun is a close-quarter weapon.

Strength: Is the same as that of a Lasgun, which can blow bloody chunks out of a human... must be a pretty advanced Shotgun to do that at all.

AP: If a Lasgun has none, neither does a Shotgun.

Fire Rate: Be glad it's as high as it is! Call it 10 balls/fragments/discs per cartridge and 5 cartriges per auto-volley, you're looking at 50 rounds. A Shuriken Catapult, with the same rate of fire, can expect to put out upwards of 250 projectiles per volley, an exponential increase!

As far as I've seen the shotgun is simply a casualty of time. Lets face it the concept is pretty simple: Fill the air with Buckshot. The shotgun has simply been outpaced by other weapon and armour technology

The stats are fine as is. Personally I would like them to let you use them for standard troopers though free of charge, that or autoguns.

Shotguns are good. For no points increase you get an assault 2 weapon. Adding plus 2 strength is a bit overkill, don't you think? I mean a heavy bolter is Str. 5. I could see paying points to upgrade the shells. I think the solid slug shell in Necro was str. 4, had longer range but only shot once.


Also, can Str. 3 even wound a bloodthrister?

Yep, 'Thirsters are only T6...

And by point of comparison... A Shotgun at S3 shoots a bunch of metal balls. A Bolter at S4 fires a homing, rocket-propelled, mass-reactive, .75 cal explosive shell.

And simply by looking at the model, you could justifiably say that a Heavy Bolter is 1.50 cal.

Why does this shotgun thing always come up in discussions? They are fine as they are. People are just too used to shotguns being the uber weapon in countless FPS games, they can't get used to the idea that in a galaxy of boltguns, rail rifles and shuriken catapults they just aren't actually all that great. Get over it.

One thing I do have to admit though is that Guard should definitely be able to take shotguns as a free alternative to lasguns/autoguns. They're pretty much equal in terms of killiness, and plus they're just so damned cool.
