Default Competitive Imperial Guard?

Can Guard be competitive? Whenever I look at lists, U see ML and GL, which do not work very well against the surge of MEQ armies that plague us. Lascannons cost too much, but Plasmas are still pretty cheap.

I was thinking of Drop Troops or Mechanized with lots of Ordnance, but I'm not sure which would do better.

Please don't flame me for thinking of competitive IG. It would just feel so rewarding defeating cheesed out super soldiers with only little guardsmen.

Well, an all-Drop Troops list could be made to be pretty mean, and then there's also Armoured Company of you're willing to be a bit cheesy (really, AC IS cheesy.)

Mechanized lists could also be pretty competative....

It really depends on your competition. Which is why I think space marines do well in tournaments, they have good all around capabilities. You can easily make a list to defeat any specific type of army. Can you make a list that will be able to do equally well against 15 different lists? I for one, have not found that yet. I suppose the best way to get close, is to cheese out a bit. Allies are also another possibility to even out the vulnerabilities in any given list.

The higher the points limit, the better you get.

Taking 2 Leman Russes and a demolisher and 3 maxed infantry platoons with Lascannons and missile launchers will ruin any Space Marines day.
It's just a wall of bodies. They cannot kill them fast enough.

Drop troops will do well in a tournament but it won't be much fun for either yourself or your opponent.

Autocannons...

LOT's of sentinels...

infact take twelve, in a 1000pt game...

NO-one has enough firepower to deal with that many light vehicles. cept another Guard army.

even better still, Drop trooping 12 sentinels with heavy flamers... give a few lascannons, and drop them behind armour...

or the best combo for this stuff...

2 Flamers, 1 Autocannon, 3 H/k's, no other upgrades, 4 times that and drop troop them.

Hey! If it were real, an armoured company is just what the emperor ordered! and it suits the imperial guard perfectly.
But most non IG players will call you cheesy........ :P

I have never played AC, but I have heard tell that they tend to get bogged down once the front few tanks get pop'ed. They stop being able to have clean fire fields.

Imperial Guard aren't competitive?

I'm a pretty new player, so it's not like I know much about them, but I always thought they'd be one of the overall stronger races. That, and I always hear about how cheesy some IG lists can get.

maximize your strengths and make up for your weaknesses. firepower, numbers, and cool tanks. figure out a way to solve the low leadership problem (commissar, standard, HSO, voxes or a combination of some or all of those). drop troops with plasma guns in vast numbers is quite cheesey but its pretty competitive. wall-of-lemans is also a good way to frustrate opponents because even marines are scared of the battlecannons.

-good leader
-lots of meat
-lots of heavy and special weapons
-tanks

i just posted on the army list page what i would use as an example of this... i think it came to 121 models, 4 tanks, a good leader, and completely saturated with heavy and special weapons.
