Default Carapace Armour

Quick question, note I'm not a Guard player, but I face them many a time and a question has arisen.

Does carapace armour cost 20 points for each individual model or 20 points for the entire squad? Also, is everyone allowed to have them? Thanks!

Why in the world would it cost 20 per model? Use your noggin, man. GW don't always make the best decisions but they aren't that bad.

Well, Space Marines cost 20 points for terminator armour and both give +1 to their current save so I just thought...

Well, no, Terminator armor is 25 points more, gives a powerfist and storm bolter, the ability to deep strike, etc. A 4+ save is worth much, much less than a 2+ save.

If GW put a 20 point per model upgrade into IG (a horde army) that would be pretty silly, wouldn't it?

20 points per squad...

Only rough riders, infantry platoons, heavy weapon platoons, command squads, support squads may use carapace

and unless you specifically take them for rough riders, you must take it for the entire army, who ever can take it

(is that against GW policy?)

jesus wept...
carapace armor is one of the most uselessly expensive upgrades as it is but it damn sure aint no 20 per model. we dont discuss points costs from codex on here, but i'm pretty sure that yer 20 point carapace isn't as game-valid as a full-on powered armor bolter wielding 4-statline marine who costs in the teens.

Thought some math might shine some light on the situation:

Say you have 60 Guardsmen. They each take 1 wound from an S3 AP- Weaopn

Without Carapce Armor: 360 points of guard (assume no upgrades).
30 wounds, 20 failed.

With Carapace Armor: 480 Points of guardsmen.
30 wounds, 15 failed.

You save 5 guardsmen for 120 points. For 120 points you could have had 20 more guardsmen!

Really, though, its value is against AP5 weapons: S3 AP5 Weapon

60 Non-carapace: 360 points
30 wounds, 30 Failed

60 Carapce: 480 Points
30 Wounds, 15 Failed

15 saved. 90 points saved for 120, but you get the benifits for the whole game
