Default ogryn tactics

hi people
need a bit of help with ogryns
iv got a squad of three (no bone ead soz) and i haven't had much success with them so far. I'm normally fighting imperial fists but i just need some help in what they specialise in killing.
cheers
and thanks in advance

Heya,

Quite frankly, they don't specialize in killing much of anything. They're brutishly strong, not terribly fast, and relatively tough, but they aren't very resilient and don't survive very long, especially with only a few models and limited attacks being thrown from the squad.

They're not good at shooting (limited to 12" and BS3).
They can assault after firing (that's at least good).
When assaulting they each have 3 attacks on the charge at a good weapon skill value and strength.
Unfortunately, they have average initiative and will strike last against most good units in assault.

For example, three Ogryns that shoot at a squad of Marines, will not even kill a marine on average. They'll sometimes kill one marine, half the time.

Another example, three Ogryns charging into assault would have three attacks each, throwing out 9 total attacks. If you upgraded to a bone'ead, you'd have 10 total attacks from the same models. Against marines, the Marines have ini4 and so strike first. Let's say you were assaulting only 6 marines with bolters (just to make it easy). They'd barely deal you a wound, because they have very few attacks just standing there. Then you finally get to strike, throwing your 9 to 10 attacks. You'd on average, kill a marine--sometimes two.

It's a very similar equivalent to 10 guardsmen assaulting marines, to drop one.

-- If you're facing Iron Fists, you're not going to get a lot of work out of your Ogryns, except to literally stall assaults against Marine squads who only have bolters, and do not have a power fist buried in there. The Ogyrns will easily be shot down very quickly. In assault, they wound well, but power armor just deflects it and you cannot have a power weapon, so you won't be ignoring any saves. The marines will tear through the Ogyrns if they outnumber them or have multiple attacks, as the Ogryns have a rotten armor save which cannot be upgraded, and Ogryns are instakilled by Str8 weapons, which Marines tend to carry (power fist, thunder hammer, meltas, missiles, etc).

I'm afraid few Ogryns will go far at all, especially against Marines.
Even a lot of Ogryns will not go very far, due to their vulnerability to the shooting phase and instant death threats.
Packing them into a Chimera is also not the best of choices, because they're quick to be entangled, or even just lost.

You would have better success with them, fighting Fire Warriors in close combat, or Scarab Swarms, Rippers and even Nurglings. They could be mildly effective there. But I'm sorry to say, they just won't be effective, even compared to Guardsmen for the cost, against Marines, neither at shooting nor assaulting.

Cheers!

(Darn Malveaux- beat me to it)

Welcome to the board, first of all.
You're probably Tom's brother, right?

I think it would help us to know what kind of list you like to play, because Ogryns are definitely a "specialized" unit that you won't want to be taking every game.

Also look at batreps all over the board and see how people there use their Ogryns.

How i'd use them is 5 ogryns and a commissar(independant usually), shove them in a chimy and drive them forward. They wont survive, but then again nothing in the guard does anyways. This gives you a decent amount of wounds to eat up(again like Mal said str8 weapons will eat you alive), plenty of ineffective yet entertaining shooting(they only hit on 4s, but you still get 10 shots), and quite a few good close combat attacks(16 str 6s and 4 power sword attacks, nothing to sneeze at). They're better off against lightly armoured hordes like stopping orc charges or diving into termagaunts.

But then again wouldn't a command squad with a chimera and armed to the teeth with flamers do the trick?
