Don't feel you have to use those doctrines though, they are really just suggestions (IMO not very good ones on the whole, I mean Close Order Drill? Seriously?)

Yeah, alot of the GW suggestions are just plain stupid.

Personally... Carapace Armour, Heavy/Special Weapons, and Stormtroopers can all represent Tau-supplied gear, and Drop Troops can be Tau tactics talking.

Just make sure to not use Commissars or Priests.

Yes, definitely no Commissars. Priests you might be able to get away with, as don't forget that some Gue'vesa still worship the Emperor. Abhumans would be good too.

You could also have great justification to take Kroot Mercs. Use them as Kroot Auxilaries from the empire fighting alongside the Gue'vesa and not mercs per say but you could use the nice rules anyway.

Well, maybe you could use an Ethereal mini for a Priest (Honour Blade -> Eviscerator?!) or even a Commissar (although dealing with those "found wanting" might be a bit extreme for the Greater Good)...

Maybe you could even justify using a Crisis suit for a Sentinel to Tau things up even more...

As for Doctrines... good suggestions already. You might use Kroot as Jungle Fighters or Light infantry if you really wanted to keep things all within the IG Codex.
