I'm thinking of starting a guard army but I cant decide to do Catachans or Tallarn... so I have a couple of questions about the old Catachan codex.

Is it still useable or will everyone freak out and yell at me if I try to use it because it came out before the new IG codex and is too old?
Is it enough different from the normal IG codex to bother with it?

The Catachan Codex is still legal, providing you take any required rules from the old Guard Codex.

You may not use Catachan Codex units as allies anymore.

Overall, I'd say Tallarn are a better choice of army.

Go with Talleran, they are underplayed as an Imperial Guard Regiment but they look very sweet. Not to mention but I think they have a good mix of the IG traits, i'm sure Wargamer could explain them better though.

Anyone know of any plans for Tallarn plastic models?

I'll probably do it either way but I think it'll cost me like 50 bucks per squad to do it out of GW archives.. unless someone knows somewhere to get them cheaper?

Don't think there are any plans in the near future for tallarnplastics (pretty much certain).

Tallarn models do look brilliant but if you are actually using a proper catachan force as in the catachan dex which is still legal then i'd go with them. Otherwise i'd say Tallarn.

For a Tau ally Cadians are better if you are allowed. Or a regular IG force using the standard models and cadian models.

They probably wont actually be played alongside my Tau very much since the people I usually play against (all 4 of them) will whine and moan if I take IG as allies with Tau but it will be my excuse for scraping off the iperial icons and stuff from any tanks I end up using...

I dont really like Cadians... too much of a standard army look, I want something that isnt incredibly common...

Yes... that's the biggest problem with the Cadian plastics: everyone uses them.

and everyone seems to use the same colour schemes to either all black "we are teh n1ght ph33r us" or a slighty changed (IE ripped) one from the 'dex.

we'll all my ig are in speedo's and i call em sexy death.
But talarn have some nice doctrines but really u should come up with your own if u want to customize your army bunches.

If u want you army to b like tau take sharpshooters and carpase armor.
3.5 bs and a 4+ armor save toss ina few plasma guns or grenade launchers whatever ur preference and play them as a more of a shooty army convert your sentienls to look kinda like tau style and u'll have a very fun army u can play with aswell as use as auxilaries for firewarriors.
