Why cant sentinals get heavy bolters, plasma guns etc? Weight, size, what?

The IG (unlike the SM) don;t have the greeatest equipment in the world, and plasma cannons are extremely valuble ancient weapons that cann't be wasted on a sentinal, so they are occasionally used as side sponsoons for the demolisher tank and the rare executioner tank.

Elyisians have multi-melta sentinals too.

They can get heavy bolters, but those are forgeworld rules. They'd be easy to convert, and mounting a heavy bolter costs the same as mounting a heavy flamer. They also have missile launchers as JD said, costing the same as lascannons, but ive never heard of sentinels armed with mortars. I suppose the reason they dont put plasma guns on sentinels is that they dont have long enough range or rate-of-fire to justify being put on a sentinel. Plasma cannons im guessing are to large to put on such as small walker(talking into account coolant systems which marines with plasma cannons dont have), and plasma weapons are also too rare on something which is meant to be a scout. They probably reserve plasma weapons for dedicated fighters, who will know how to use them as effectivly as possible.

mmm, a plasma cannon is a bit overpowerd for sentinal. But then why do they have lascannons? What, are the missile launcher armed ones the ones forge world?

A Mortar-Sentinel would be an exercise in stupidity... Plasma weapons are too valuble, and Melta-weapons are too close ranged for traditional roles (although I'd like to see them codified; for urban and drop-troop regiments they would be fluffy as anything).

Mortars would be silly. Missile Launchers would be nice if they were cheaper than lascannons. Heavy bolters wouldn't be so bad either.

It has similar stats to a mortar, but its definetly not a mortar. it fires dozens of tiny rockets with saturate a targeted area with explosions and shrapnel, hence the bad-AP and blast template. But it fires many rounds, not one, and it fires them directly at the target. It would work great as a retreating weapon, aim in the general direction and let loose a massive barrage. Then while the enemy are taking cover and your launcher reloads you make a run for it.

Note: I have a very nice multi-melta conversion for one of my sentinels, but in playing terms its not all that good.
