Default Death Korp Of Krieg fluff

I've been looking at doing a Death Korp army for a few years now and now that it looks like FW is putting out a range relatively soon (well by GW standards :P) I've finally decided to start asap. I've also be thinking of expanding it into a epic and battlefleet gothic force as well (if any of my friends still play that is). I really want to make the army as fluff filled as possible but. I've been unable to find more then a few paragraphs on the Death Korp and so I was wondering if anyone knew of a good source of Death Korp fluff?

Ah, another recruit to the great Korps! Ok, here's some DKoK fluff originally posted by CFirpi on 40k Online a few months ago.

At that time Krieg was a peaceful planet populated by a hard-working, hard-nosed, industrious, well-educated and disciplined people with an unyielding faith in the Almighty Emperor of Mankind (which remains the case to this day). The planet was covered with vast plains, large forests, rolling hills and tall snow-covered mountains and was slightly colder than Terra standards.
Krieg was a centre of learning, the University of Heidelstadt being renowned in the entire sub-sector and beyond and a world where the military was held in the highest respect as it had a long and glorious tradition of service to the Imperium. Officers in particular were perfectly trained in the military academies of the planet, such as Schötten, and the General Staff was highly competent.
The political system was aristocratic and centred on the Landtag, the assembly of the noble families and city representatives of the planet. The Autarch, head of the Landtag and nominal governor of the planet, was elected among them and held office for five years. The Landtag was however more a diplomatic conference between sovereign noble families and a bureaucratic quagmire than a national assembly. Krieg was very decentralised. Local assemblies, nobles or a combination of both made laws and governed.
The most important families, large land-owners and industrialists, were the Schönhausen, the Habsgen-Lothrinburg and the Hohenstauffen, among others. These families shared power and their members were often elected as Autarch. When they were not, client families were selected in their place.
In 428.M40, in the closest elections in the history of Krieg, Reinhardt von Oldenberg was elected Autarch against Otto von Schönhausen, the candidate of the establishment. The old families accepted this, knowing that in five year’s time they would regain power.
However over the next five years, Oldenberg bribed, blackmailed and corrupted many members of the minor families and military officers in an attempt to maintain himself in power. And in 433.M40, when election time came again, he was re-elected with a large majority. His first action as newly elected Autarch was to proclaim Krieg independent from the Imperium and renounce the Emperor as his Divine master.

The civil war
This action caused an outcry within the population of Krieg. Millions demonstrated their loyalty to the Imperium and faith in the Emperor with huge demonstrations in the streets of the cities, an event never seen before in the history of the planet. These actions were repressed severely by the legal authority of Krieg, at gunpoint if necessary.
After a week of civil unrest, one of the house guard of the Autarch, the Krieg 7th ‘Totenkopf’ launched an assault on the palace in an attempt to overthrow Oldenberg and re-establish the authority of the Imperium on the planet. The attempt was stopped by other regiments of the house guard loyal to the Autarch, their officers having been bribed or otherwise corrupted. The Krieg 7th retired with heavy losses.
In the mean time, the old families, especially the Schönhausen and the Habsgen-Lothrinburg, along with officers of the Planetary Defence Force loyal to them, decided to launch an open rebellion against the felonious rule of the Autarch and re-establish the authority of the Imperium.
The armies of Krieg were divided between those who sided with the Autarch, either by loyalty to the legal power or through corruption or blackmail, and those who sided with the Imperial loyalists out of duty for the Emperor.
Open war broke out between the two factions. The conflict was total. Cities were bombed into submission, the countryside burned, large parts of the population were deported into labour camps because they were deemed disloyal. The surface of Krieg was devastated and the population slowly moved into massive underground bunkers to avoid the worst effects of the conflict. Pollution worsened as both sides tried to outdo each other in a war of attrition. Moreover the loyalists made a point in continuing to pay the tithes to the Imperium, both out of loyalty and because they did not want the intervention of outside forces in their internal affairs.
Trenches, bunkers and barbed wire mushroomed across the blasted landscape of Krieg as the war grinded on. The ground shook day and night as thousands of artillery pieces pounded the enemy.
The war was a deadlock. Both sides were relatively well balanced and none seemed able to win a decisive battle in this war of attrition which rapidly militarised the whole society of Krieg. The politicians gave way to the military and the Landtag of the loyalist was suspended until the end of the war, the General Staff taking charge.
Cities changed hands several times, each time the victors purging the dwindling population of elements they considered hostile. The loyalist population especially worked itself into a fury over the rejection of the Imperial Cult and provided fanaticised troops to the armies of the pro-Imperial faction.
In 443.M40, after a decade of inconclusive and total warfare, the loyalist General Staff was at a loss as to what they should do to force the decision. They refused to allow the wider Imperium to be involved in what they considered as the internal affairs of Krieg. Colonel Jurten of the Krieg 33rd proposed a radical campaign of nuclear cleansing of the main cities loyal to the Autarch. This would deal a crippling blow to the enemy’s industrial capabilities, as well as to its morale. The General Staff approved and the Jurten Plan was put in motion.
Each side had been developing nuclear weapons and they had been used on a few occasions as battlefield weapons, but never before in a strategic sweep of all the enemy’s capabilities. The first attacks were devastating to the Autarch’s forces, dealing him what seemed a crippling blow.
However the Autarch had his own nukes and unleashed them on the loyalist cities, destroying several. Both sides were severely weakened and the planet was utterly devastated. For several years they both tried to rebuild their forces and to bury their cities deeper, away from the dangers of radiation and heat of nuclear explosions. The industry of both sides suffered untold destruction and reduce it to a fraction of its pre-war level. But the industrious people of Krieg rebuilt their factories and started to build new vehicles such as the Ragnarok tank, Gotterdammerung Howitzer and many other, which remain the trademark of Krieg siege regiments to this day.
Colonel Jurten remained adamant that his plan had the greatest chance of success and the population supported him because they had suffered so much they want those loyal to the Autarch to burn in hell, literally.
The strategy would be different this time around however. The enemy defences would be nuked and then loyalist soldiers would move through the irradiated areas and take the enemy cities. Even with maximum protection thanks to drugs and suits, Jurten was sending soldiers to their death. The dose of radiation they would receive would be fatal and they would not last more than a few weeks, at best. But the soldiers of Krieg were willing to die to defeat their enemy. Thus the Death Korps was born.
The Autarch’s forces were taken totally by surprise by this suicide technique. Several of his main cities were taken with minimal fighting. While the troops that led the assault all died of radiation, they survived long enough for reinforcements to be sent and relieve them.
The Autarch was hard pressed. The tide turned finally in 469.M40 in a battle now called the Völkerschlacht, because it is the battle in which the people of Krieg won their freedom. The battle took place near the city of Leipburg. Surrounded on three sides, the Autarch’s armies fought for two days. Eventually the traitors were pushed back towards the city. The Autarch only escaped with his life because he abandoned his troops. This also led to the collapse on his hold over most of the cities of Krieg still under his yoke.
Despite this crippling loss, the Autarch clang to power and many troops remained loyal to him for they had no hope of surrendering to the loyalists. He strengthened his hold over roughly a fifth of Krieg’s main continent, Preussen, and fought on.
In 474.M40 a commando operation in the Alpen mountains, led by the Krieg 7th, eager to repair past mistakes, managed to capture the Autarch in his bunker, the Eagle’s Nest. Oldenberg was put on trial and sentenced to death and publicly eviscerated. But his death did not end the rebellion.
For another five hundred years, war went on. The Autarch’s forces continued the attrition war, enslaving the population in the cities still under their control. They also lived deep in the atomised wastelands, away from the main population centres, drawing their strength from those who did not manage to reach the underground bunkers in time or refuse to.
The war was a combination of guerrilla and trench. Slowly however the loyalists and their superior industrial power allowed them to gain the upper and oust the traitors out of the cities, forcing them more and more to turn to guerrilla tactics.
In 945.M40, after more than five centuries of warfare, Krieg was proclaimed liberated from the taint of the rebellion of the Autarch. To this day however the nuclear wastelands outside the underground cities remain the domains of a free people, refusing the authority of the re-established Autarch and blaming the General Staff for its ruthless methods in the war.

Today Krieg’s surface is little more than a radioactive wasteland. Nothing is left of the rolling plains and thick forests. Little to no life survived the thorough campaign of nuclear strikes unleashed by the loyalists. Even oceans are nothing but polluted and lifeless bodies of acidic water. Only mountains more or less escaped the devastation.
The Kriegan landscape is dotted by the remnants of trench lines, kilometres of barbed wire, the ruins of the old cities and thousands of bunkers, which serve as shelters and refuges for the Wastelanders, the people who have either been exiled from the Deep Cities or refuse to live there altogether.
The main features of Krieg are the many Deep Cities in which the population has taken refuge during the war. Their architecture varies from a network of many underground bunkers to gigantic artificial caves excavated from the rock. However they are all designed with defence in mind and capable to turn into fortresses should the need arise. Moreover because of environment hazards, Deep Cities are highly compartmentalised to avoid the spread of radiation. Nevertheless, Kriegans have tried to recreate some of their old environment in their new dwellings and parks dot the cities.
Newer cities, as Neu Breslau, are built around a vast central cavern with a central artificial pillar housing the city government and the walls are covered by scaled gardens. The roof is made of steelglass, allowing natural light to shine in the city for a couple of hours each day, around noon. At that time, many people will gather on the large terraces to enjoy the sun bathing their beloved city. Other older cities, like Marburg, are much utilitarian in design and resemble more military bunkers than cities.
The war and the destructions it brought had reinforced many traits of the population. They are even more devout in the worship of the Emperor, sometimes bordering on fanaticism, and look down on less faithful followers, sometimes to the point of hostility. The importance of the military has also strengthened discipline and loyalty, although the government and officers stress that this loyalty must go to the Emperor and soldiers are called to act against their superiors if they see they are not doing their duty to the Emperor properly. Kriegans tend to lead conservative and pious lives, concentrating in being productive members of their society and faithful followers of the Emperor. They tend to have a grim and serious attitude due to their belief in their planet's need for redemption. Some have even argued that this might be the cause for a death wish among the population. But this idea is contradicted by a low suicide rate.
Krieg remains an immense industrial centre within the Krieg sub-sector. Despite a terrible war, the loyalists have always faithfully paid their tithes and whole factories were dismantled to be rebuilt underground away from the destruction. The long civil war has made heavy industry, especially weapon manufacturing, a prime characteristic of Krieg. Even if after the war, the industry re-centred on producing goods for the public, the military-industrial complex remains the first employer on Krieg.
The government of Krieg returned into civilian hands after centuries of military control. However the military influence is still all pervasive in current political life. Officers seat in the Landtag and the Autarch is always a retired general officer. The old aristocratic families have adapted however and they maintain their influence in the government. However the regime has also democratised a little, by allowing representatives of the common people to be elected in the Landtag. The military pervades the bureaucracy, uniforms are a common sight in the streets and retired soldiers still proudly wear medals and awards on their chest.
The military established universal suffrage for all men over 21 who did their three years of military service. Military service is compulsory and only very few escape it, as they are considered as second rate individuals, who shrink away from their duties. Although women are barred from voting by a highly conservative mindset they are highly respected, if only because they are the mothers and wives of soldiers. Citizenship is taken most seriously by the people of Krieg. Citizens are all politically aware, in part because of indoctrination in the PDF. They are loyal to the government, but they have learned to keep a weary eye on it, for fear another betrayal might occur. However since all citizens can their military gear at home, such a rebellion would probably be short live.
All mutants are exterminated at birth by the population. Harbouring mutants is sentenced by death and citizens are encouraged to turn in anyone they suspect of sheltering them. The Kriegan PDF launches regular campaigns to root out the mutant population in the wastelands and exterminate all who live there.
The General Staff plays a capital role in the political life of Krieg. It is considered as the guardian of legality, of Krieg’s continuous loyalty to the Imperium and it takes this role very seriously. The General Staff can order and investigation and court martial any official or member of the Landtag up to the Autarch for treason. However this prerogative has never been used and the General Staff concentrates on its military duties.
The Kriegan PDF is divided into three tiers. The first tier, composed of both professionals and conscripts doing their military service, is called the Heer and is Krieg's principal defence against invasion. It is a sizable army of several thousands of regiments. All those who accomplished their military service are then versed into the reserve, also known as the Landwehr, until they reach the age of 55. Reservists are required to train for one week every three months with their respective regiments. Since reservists keep their weapons at home and warehouses with thousands of vehicles riddle the Deep Cities of Krieg, thousands more regiments can be raised in a matter of days should an emergency arise. Finally after 55, citizens are part of the Volksturm, the citizen militia. In case of war, it would primarily tasked with civil defence although the General Staff would not shrink from sending them to battle should the need arise. Indeed warehouses with weapons for the Volksturm exist and are kept constantly filled, just in case.
Krieg has maintained its academic excellence throughout the war and remains to this day an important intellectual centre. The Kriegans consider themselves a cultured people, even in the face of their sometime barbaric during the civil war and the fearsome reputation of the Death Krieg. Since the civil war, an intellectual current called Romanticism has been in vogue. Romanticism idealises the period before the civil war to the point where the General Staff was worried of possible civil unrest. However the movement also emphasises the fall from grace of the rebellion and that only through hard work, unyielding faith in the Emperor can Krieg hope for redemption. Romanticism has expressed itself in poetry, novels, plays and opera but currently concentrates on architecture and landscaping. The current building of open spaces filled with trees and grass are part of this movement. The most extremist Romantics are talking of repainting the walls of the corridors of the Deep Cities with scenes from the life before the war but it has been met with stiff refusal by authorities.

The Death Korps of Krieg
The Death Korps of Krieg was born in the days of the great offensive using nuclear weapons against the fortifications and cities loyal to the traitor Autarch of Krieg. The name derives from the idea that those who joined these units gave up their life entirely in the service of the Emperor and were ready to die so that Krieg would one day be free from the Autarch. It was also because those who joined knew they would die in the terrible nuclear wastelands the atomic destruction had wrought to the surface of Krieg.
After the liberation of the planet the Death Korps was tasked with the quest for redemption of the planet. Indeed Kriegans felt that the honour and name of their planet had been sullied by the betrayal of the Autarch and imposed upon themselves a strict penitence. This penitence befell on both the civilian population and the military for their respective inability in overthrowing the corrupt and traitor Autarch.
This is the reason why civilians on Krieg are faithful to the Emperor to the point of fanaticism, why they keep a watchful eye on their government and why they serve with distinction in the PDF. They also contribute the redemption effort by their hard work to pay the tithes Krieg owe the Imperium. The population has made a point in exceeding the requirements of the Administratum every time, leading to a reassessment of the planet's capabilities and a steady rise in tithe levels.
The military is the main way through which Kriegans hope to find redemption. Through service in the Death Korps and glorious and decisive actions in the service of the Emperor, they hope to prove to themselves and to the Imperium that Kriegans are not traitors and oath breakers. And they are ready to go at any length to do so, requesting the bloodiest war zones and the suicide missions in a never-ending attempt to re-establish the honour of their planet.

To the population of Krieg, soldiers of the Death Korps make the ultimate sacrifice to both their world and the Emperor. They give their life to the Imperium so that it may endure. Families of members of the Death Korps consider their relatives to be dead from the moment they join.
This resulted in the Feast of Mourning, a great and dark festival that happens at the time of every Founding of new Death Korps units. The new regiments of the Death Korps march through the streets of the Deep Cities and the populace mourns and weeps at their passage. Some throw dark flowers under the feet. Eventually the regiments gather in the city main square where the priests of the Ecclesiarchy conduct a mass funeral ceremony for the thousands of soldiers.
At the end of the feast the newly inducted soldiers adorn their uniforms with symbols of death, often skulls and bones, the most common feature being a skull painted on their gasmasks. This symbolises their fearlessness of death, their willingness to die for the Emperor and the fact that since they are already dead they do not fear death
After the troops' departure the families gather for a funeral dinner and celebrate the departed, gone to fight for the Emperor in the heavens. Friends and neighbours will mourn the dead but also congratulate them for having contributed to the redemption of their planet.
Soldiers of Krieg are dead to their relatives and people and as such are forbidden to ever return to their home world. They are to die fighting for the Emperor.

The structure of the units of the Death Korps of Krieg varies greatly. Most of them are large infantry formations specialised in trench warfare and able to fight in the most gruesome conditions. They are responsible for the fearsome reputation of the Death Korps as soldiers that will never surrender, fight against impossible odds in the direst conditions and often win against all odds by simple force of will.
These units of the Death Korps are also great specialists of siege warfare and are often accompanied by units of combat engineers, sappers and siege artillery. There is no fortress that can hold for long against the resilience and spirit of the Death Korps.
However the Panzer Korps is as crucial to the reputation and efficiency of the Death Korps as its infantry units. The industrial might of Krieg has been put to use to produce large numbers of Leman Russ battle tanks and Chimera transports to equip many regiments both of PDF and of the Death Korps.
These units are specialised in lightning strikes across almost any terrain, the engineers having made it a point of honour that no obstacle should stop the tanks of the Panzer Korps. The tanks and Chimeras punch through enemy lines at incredible speed, attacking the rear areas of the enemy to disorganise it and flanking the less mobile enemy.
Once encircled in what Kriegans call a Kessel, the enemy stands little chance. The Panzer Korps guarantees the enemy will not escape while the infantry methodically eradicates it. This strategy, as well as the spirit of the officers, willing to take risk to achieve greater results, has made the Death Korps a deadly weapon.
There are however times when the stubbornness and fearlessness of the Death Korps work against them. Kriegans often refuse to give up a single inch of land to the enemy, preferring to stand and die where they are. While the enemy may lose many troops to take a position held by the Death Korps, sometimes retreating to a more easily defendable position would have allowed the Death Korps' soldiers to fight more effectively and possibly to stop the enemy advance entirely instead of only slowing it down.
Death Riders are another important feature of the Death Korps. Horses were one of the prides of Krieg before the war and remain so to this day. The Lipizzaner horses are the pride of the population of Krieg. However the steeds of the Death Riders are an altogether different breed. Genetic modification and generation of adaptation have made these horses resistant to radiation poisoning, to combat gas and other such weapons. Combined with rebreathing apparatus and bionic implants they can survive in the most hostile environments.
Death Riders constitute both the reconnaissance arm of the Death Korps and an incredible psychological weapon. Their speed allows them to flank the enemy and strike where he does not expect and en masse riders bearing down on you with their lances are a fearsome sight. Death Riders are also known as Uhlans because the wind ululates as they charge, reinforcing the psychological effect.

The officers of the Death Korps mainly come from an elite milieu of aristocrats with military tradition spanning generations. They all undergo incredibly exigent training in the Military Staff School of Schötten for four years. The education includes military history of both the Imperium and famous campaign of the Death Korps and of the Krieg civil war, strategy, tactics, economics, political science, language in particular High Gothic in which most officers are fluent and many other discipline. Physical training is very strict but includes domains that are considered as a must have for any Kriegan officer, in particular horseback riding and sword fighting.
All disciplines are deemed important but riding especially makes the difference for officers seeking to pursue a career within the prestigious Panzer Korps. It is not a necessary requirement but out of two cadets with qualifications the best rider will always be selected.

The Death Korps maintains many traditions. First among them is the Order of the Iron Cross, in which the most gallant soldiers, who fight above and beyond the call of duty, are inducted. The Order of the Iron Cross is divided into many levels: Second Class, First Class, Knight’s Cross, Knight’s Cross with oak leaves, with oak leaves and swords, with oak leaves, swords and diamonds and the Knight’s Cross with golden oak leaves, swords and diamonds.
Soldiers and officers awarded this most prestigious medal wear it at all time around their neck as a badge of honour.
Another long standing and already mentioned tradition is that to adorn uniforms with symbols of death such as skulls or bones. They represent both the loyalty to the Imperium and their willingness to lay down their lives in its defence.
The most terrible tradition of the Death Korps is the unsanctioned campaigns of extermination and genocide against those they deem not faithful to the Emperor. Special groups are often formed behind the line of advance of the Death Korps to investigate and root out supposed opposition to the Imperium. The reason for these campaigns range from heresy, cowardice in the face of the enemy and treason. Betrayal of oaths to the Emperor has caused particularly hateful crimes from the soldiers of the Death Korps, as these actions remind them of the civil war on their own world.
All this fluff relly blew me away when I read it, and it sounds 100% accurate.

its good fluff, but their is one thing that i hate. can't they be more imaginative with the names? i mean, sure, they are trying to encourage the prussia/german atmosphere, but bloody hell. every single city name is an exact copy of a german city, every kriegesk word is simply a german word, every tradition has the same name as its german equivalent. like the iron cross, or adding oak leaves and swords. the only krieg related name that isn't german through and through is the ragnarok battletank.

I hope they'll be alittle less then 35, since they will have less parts overall then the Elysians. For me its going to be one of those armies that I have to nurse over a year or so.
