I'll run down:

Good:
1. models are cheap and reasnably good looking
2. can be used as any regiment (within reason)
3. can get large numbers of them

Bad
1. Cadian doctrines are S***
2. Lousy to convert
3. Cannot be used for light Infantry or Carapace armour

Overall, use the models, not the regiment

What's this I keep hearing about cadian models not being able to be used for light infantry? I've seen quite a few LI armies in WD based on the cadian models.

As Kaskrin Trooper said, don't use cadian models as cadians (unless you really want to play cadians), there are heaps of regiments which copy the look (if not the discipline and prowess) of the cadians so you can come up with your own regiment.

You can't use Cadians as light infantry for the same reasons you can't say Catachans have Carapace: they clearly don't have the right gear!

The reason you see WD "Cadian Light Infantry" is the same reason that Sisters Repentia have a 4+ Armour Save: GW are idiots.

okay, okay, okay, just asking!

... however, just what is the 'right gear' for light infantry - not wearing helmets and the chest armour of the cadians?

The correct gear is anything that wouldn't weigh you down. Examples of acceptable models are:

Tanith (camo-cloaks and matt-black fatigues. No armour).
Catachans (no armour).
Tallarn (desert robes, no armour).

Valhallans are a possibility, but no-one else (steath is an important part of a LI army, and wearing a parade-ground uniform is not stealthy...)

Yeah, come to think of it - those shoulderpads would sure get in the way a lot...

Use the cadian modle but pick your own doctrines to what fits you style of play.

the biggest problem with IG(Impereal Guard) is that you'll end up buying alot of models.

I worked out my 1000pts of IG and its going to cost $800-$1000 canadian.

Well!
Imperial guard are o.k,idon't collect them personally but i have a friend who does but he only ever beats me if he uses his troops and heavy support in complete harmony. So watch out how you use them.

I can see the cadian model not working for carapace armor or jungle fighter doctrine, but light infantry wouldn't seem out of place. The troops still keep their +5 armor, so it shouldn't change that much. Who knows, maybe the tournament scene is more picky, but I'd be glad they used cadians so the armor save was obvious.
