Default So, whats is the best way to play IG?

The Tactica entries are interesting, as has been the discussion on Lascannons, as i think it shows a variety of ways in which to play IG. How do y'all structure your IG armies? For example, take the static/mobile and armourd/unamrmoured vectors and you get:

(i) Static, Unarmoured - Big Infantry - loads and loads of troops, little armour
(ii) Mobile, Armoured - Armoured Division - a lot of armour, small army
(iii)Static, Armoured - mix of tanks + mainly footslogging infantry in large numbers (my army model)
(iv) Mobile, Unarmoured - Motorised Infantry - loads of troops, few tanks, but lots of Chimeras to move troops in.

Another vector is the long range/colse range battle approach - at what range are you trying to build the army for optimal operation? (Mine is a long range "wall of fire" designed to KO tanks, monsters etc early on)

This is more of a 'what way do you play' topic

My Catachans vary in plya style for me

-I have a fire base which sits and shoots
-I have my assault units like my patrol
-I use snipers alot
-I take ambushing units alot

Basically my army is optimum at around 36". Snipers, Heavy bolters, Auto cannons and lasguns basically make an average of 36"

With my Danitun Guard, I stand back and shoot and then advance forward with my combat units when the enemy is just about to charge.

SIGAFH is my method of choice... the original and best.

I've been playing footslogging grenadiers behind tanks, but I'm about to mount them up in chimeras just so they make it to the objectives.

Every game has been all infantry die, tanks win game. Need to find a CC method that works.

In my opinion, the best way to use the Guard is to use them with an Ally. 4th edition literally took a lot of oomph from the Guard as a shooting army, with the downplay of the big ordnance and general tank mounted weaponry. Think about it; who's scared of the Chimeras and Sentinels? Do competitive gamers cringe at the thought of the Russ or Basilisk in a mission? Nope. And what about all those BS3 pea-shooters? Not really. They really lack that middle ground. And it used to see like the Guard could really stack up the heavy weapons, but sadly, a Marine army or Chaos could wrack up more heavy bolters for less. So the Guard are really pressed for getting their guns blazing. They just don't have that big fire power feeling anymore. They can get outshot by literally all the other shooting armies. And the cheery on top, is that even Tyranid can outshoot the Guard in some instances--which is just weird.

So really in my mind, and in my experience, the Guard are really good and do well when they're an ally to another army; namely the Inquisition. Otherwise, when the Inquisition is added as an ally to the army. It adds a lot of what you need to the force.

1 - You get combat support; Assassins? Grey Knights? Acro Flaggelants? Yea!
2 - You get storm troopers with thunder hammer access if you want; or eviscerator access.
3 - You get jump pack infantry with power armor; or deep striking infantry with power armor.
4 - You get that middle ground; that powerful resilient walking troop--the Sisters.

I really like how the Inquisition & Guard go together like a hand and glove. The Callidus assassin alone is worth her weight in gold to a shooting army for baiting, blasting and then crippling something else later. Add to that the utility of an Inquisitor and you can aid yourself against certain harms (like mystics for fighting off deep strikers; psychic powers with hoods, etc) and you can even use other units to buff moral around your army via books of lucius if you need it.

Guard + Inquisition = Best way to field the Imperium's finest!

Cheers!

inquisiton...interesting! never thought of it as that...more of a nice way to field a hard "core" to my army...that and as an assasin-mobile.

sounds like one of my standard games! i love armor so.... i wish AC didnt obnoxiously jack the cost of a HQ tank....its absurd! it costs so much, and dies like a much cheaper LR! ah well....

so on topic: the short answer is .... "Shooty". which style of "shooty" is where your diversity comes in. making a technical IG "assauly" army is possible, though extremely difficult. some more doctrines and troops options would help.

It's funny people saying tanks/Ordnance weapons have become weaker... last time I played Necrons, the Monolith spent four turns firing at my Leman Russ, never even scratched it.

Battlecannon returned fire, and slagged it.

Tanks are still king of the battlefield... well, Imperial tanks are! ;D
