Default Justifying Hardend Fighters

Well, how would you do it? WS3 seems to be that of a well-trained, competent soldier - what do you have to do to have WS4? Obviously, putting a bayonet on the end of your lasgun doesn't cut it - what about a culture that traditionally fights from a young age for status, and has the habit of taking enemies' feet as trophies?

Just a question of where people think the line is drawn...

Sorry, which doctrine gives WS4?

None that I know of.

Fine, be technical - it gives +1 WS, normally increasing it to 4.

Well the dex sort of clearly explains that those with this doctrine come from particular violent societies or backgrounds. This can be referenced to the underworld of hive worlds, barbaric and wild worlds where children grow up on the street and in gangs where they are lucky to make it past their teen years or early twenties. This early experience in hand to hand fighting is amplified by standard guard training to the point where they are better skilled at fighting in hand to hand.

How are they different then say someone from a civil world? Well the standard human is probably WS 1. After months of training they are WS 3, avg for the 40k universe, those with the doctrine have 5-10 more years of hand to hand experience, not in training but in surviving, the fact that they lived to be drafted or join the guard a testament to their skill at killing in hand to hand

For my army i justify the ferocioucity of my guys fighting as them trying to prove themselves worthy of forgiveness for some act of heresy committed in the past (kinda like the DAs)

The only force I've ever really considered Ws 4 for is my Evadian Guard. These guys are raised from birth on concepts of honour and glory, taught that there is nothing finer in this world than the clash of steel on steel, and a noble death in battle. They train with a sword from the moment they are old enough to hold one, and is it normal for them to have signed up with a Free Military regiment by thirteen.

Hand to hand combat is all they exist for. It is part of their history, their culture and their religion. That, I feel, is what justifies Ws 4.

Are you using these particular guardsmen. Because i have something very similer, its a japanese imperial army. They are men brought up with a sword and their honour, they have all things to with CC.

Actually standard human WS is 2- Conscripts

I consider WS 4 to be only for either "Elite" Shock troops, feral worlds, or worlds stuck in times of old through culture.

Pretty much. A human, upon entering "training" for the Guard, is Ws 2.

With the "Hardened Fighters", the idea is that they are already so experienced at "conscript" level that they are effectively Ws 3. Factor in the training of the Guard (which, given their innate skill, would be well above average), and you've got Ws 4 elite.
