Default 501st Death Korp - Fluff

The Death Korps of Krieg
The Death Korps of Krieg was born in the days of the great offensive using nuclear weapons against the fortifications and cities loyal to the traitor Autarch of Krieg. The name derives from the idea that those who joined these units gave up their life entirely in the service of the Emperor and were ready to die so that Krieg would one day be free from the Autarch. It was also because those who joined knew they would die in the terrible nuclear wastelands the atomic destruction had wrought to the surface of Krieg.
After the liberation of the planet the Death Korps was tasked with the quest for redemption of the planet. Indeed Kriegans felt that the honor and name of their planet had been sullied by the betrayal of the Autarch and imposed upon themselves a strict penitence. This penitence befell on both the civilian population and the military for their respective inability in overthrowing the corrupt and traitor Autarch.
This is the reason why civilians on Krieg are faithful to the Emperor to the point of fanaticism, why they keep a watchful eye on their government and why they serve with distinction in the PDF. They also contribute the redemption effort by their hard work to pay the tithes Krieg owe the Imperium. The population has made a point in exceeding the requirements of the Administratum every time, leading to a reassessment of the planet's capabilities and a steady rise in tithe levels.
The military is the main way through which Kriegans hope to find redemption. Through service in the Death Korps and glorious and decisive actions in the service of the Emperor, they hope to prove to themselves and to the Imperium that Kriegans are not traitors and oath breakers. And they are ready to go at any length to do so, requesting the bloodiest war zones and the suicide missions in a never-ending attempt to re-establish the honor of their planet.
To the population of Krieg, soldiers of the Death Korps make the ultimate sacrifice to both their world and the Emperor. They give their life to the Imperium so that it may endure. Families of members of the Death Korps consider their relatives to be dead from the moment they join.
This resulted in the Feast of Mourning, a great and dark festival that happens at the time of every Founding of new Death Korps units. The new regiments of the Death Korps march through the streets of the Deep Cities and the populace mourns and weeps at their passage. Some throw dark flowers under the feet. Eventually the regiments gather in the city main square where the priests of the Ecclesiarch conduct a mass funeral ceremony for the thousands of soldiers.
At the end of the feast the newly inducted soldiers adorn their uniforms with symbols of death, often skulls and bones, the most common feature being a skull painted on their gasmasks. This symbolizes their fearlessness of death, their willingness to die for the Emperor and the fact that since they are already dead they do not fear death
After the troops' departure the families gather for a funeral dinner and celebrate the departed, gone to fight for the Emperor in the heavens. Friends and neighbors will mourn the dead but also congratulate them for having contributed to the redemption of their planet. Soldiers of Krieg are dead to their relatives and people and as such are forbidden to ever return to their home world. They are to die fighting for the Emperor.
The structure of the units of the Death Korps of Krieg varies greatly. Most of them are large infantry formations specialized in trench warfare and able to fight in the most gruesome conditions. They are responsible for the fearsome reputation of the Death Korps as soldiers that will never surrender, fight against impossible odds in the direst conditions and often win against all odds by simple force of will.
These units of the Death Korps are also great specialists of siege warfare and are often accompanied by units of combat engineers, sappers and siege artillery. There is no fortress that can hold for long against the resilience and spirit of the Death Korps.
However the Panzer Korps is as crucial to the reputation and efficiency of the Death Korps as its infantry units. The industrial might of Krieg has been put to use to produce large numbers of Leman Russ battle tanks and Chimera transports to equip many regiments both of PDF and of the Death Korps.
These units are specialized in lightning strikes across almost any terrain, the engineers having made it a point of honor that no obstacle should stop the tanks of the Panzer Korps. The tanks and Chimeras punch through enemy lines at incredible speed, attacking the rear areas of the enemy to disorganize it and flanking the less mobile enemy.
Once encircled in what Kriegans call a Kessel, the enemy stands little chance. The Panzer Korps guarantees the enemy will not escape while the infantry methodically eradicates it. This strategy, as well as the spirit of the officers, willing to take risk to achieve greater results, has made the Death Korps a deadly weapon.
There are however times when the stubbornness and fearlessness of the Death Korps work against them. Kriegans often refuse to give up a single inch of land to the enemy, preferring to stand and die where they are. While the enemy may lose many troops to take a position held by the Death Korps, sometimes retreating to a more easily defendable position would have allowed the Death Korps' soldiers to fight more effectively and possibly to stop the enemy advance entirely instead of only slowing it down.
Death Riders are another important feature of the Death Korps. Horses were one of the prides of Krieg before the war and remain so to this day. The Lipizzaner horses are the pride of the population of Krieg. However the steeds of the Death Riders are an altogether different breed. Genetic modification and generation of adaptation have made these horses resistant to radiation poisoning, to combat gas and other such weapons. Combined with rebreathing apparatus and bionic implants they can survive in the most hostile environments.
Death Riders constitute both the reconnaissance arm of the Death Korps and an incredible psychological weapon. Their speed allows them to flank the enemy and strike where he does not expect and en masse riders bearing down on you with their lances are a fearsome sight. Death Riders are also known as Uhlans because the wind ululates as they charge, reinforcing the psychological effect.
The officers of the Death Korps mainly come from an elite milieu of aristocrats with military tradition spanning generations. They all undergo incredibly exigent training in the Military Staff School of Schötten for four years. The education includes military history of both the Imperium and famous campaign of the Death Korps and of the Krieg civil war, strategy, tactics, economics, political science, and language in particular High Gothic in which most officers are fluent and many other discipline. Physical training is very strict but includes domains that are considered as a must have for any Kriegan officer, in particular horseback riding and sword fighting.
All disciplines are deemed important but riding especially makes the difference for officers seeking to pursue a career within the prestigious Panzer Korps. It is not a necessary requirement but out of two cadets with qualifications the best rider will always be selected.
The Death Korps maintains many traditions. First among them is the Order of the Iron Cross, in which the most gallant soldiers, who fight above and beyond the call of duty, are inducted. The Order of the Iron Cross is divided into many levels: Second Class, First Class, Knight’s Cross, Knight’s Cross with oak leaves, with oak leaves and swords, with oak leaves, swords and diamonds and the Knight’s Cross with golden oak leaves, swords and diamonds.
Soldiers and officers awarded this most prestigious medal wear it at all time around their neck as a badge of honor.
Another long-standing and already mentioned tradition is that to adorn uniforms with symbols of death such as skulls or bones. They represent both the loyalty to the Imperium and their willingness to lay down their lives in its defence.
The most terrible tradition of the Death Korps is the unsanctioned campaigns of extermination and genocide against those they deem not faithful to the Emperor. Special groups are often formed behind the line of advance of the Death Korps to investigate and root out supposed opposition to the Imperium. The reason for these campaigns range from heresy, cowardice in the face of the enemy and treason. Betrayal of oaths to the Emperor has caused particularly hateful crimes from the soldiers of the Death Korps, as these actions remind them of the civil war on their own world.

501st Sturmtruppe Regiment
The history of the 501st begins in the Wastelands during the last 15 years of the civil war. The Autarch had been dead for close to 50 years, and yet there was still fighting. The 501st was tasked by the General Staff with the job of taking back a city in the Wastelands. The city was called Stranilsk. When the 501st tried to march into the city, it got something it didn’t expect. Two full regiments of the traitor units were stationed there. The worst fighting began in the city square. When the 501st entered it, the hidden enemy soldiers opened up full bore on the unsuspecting regiment. The fighting slowly worked down the line, until the regiment had been completely sucked into the combat in the city. Trapped and surrounded, the 501st waited until nightfall to strike.
At midnight, the 501st silently crept through the city, moving into position where the heaviest fighting had been located. When the signal was given, the 501st opened up with everything they had, capturing the city square, Lovinski Street, Bornisk Street, and Morvetti Street. That left 2 city sub sections in control of the enemy. At dawn, the 501st ‘s fury fell upon the trapped enemy soldiers, wiping out those who did not surrender, and capturing those who did. Once the city was taken, the 501st is said to have moved out to another Wasteland city. But some say that the 501st lined up the prisoners and shot every 5th man in the line, leaving the rest to flee into the plains. Thus, the 501st earned the nickname “Ghostwalkers”, for that midnight offensive in the city of Stranilsk.
After the 5 full centuries of war, the entire 501st was recruited into the Imperial Guard as part of the Death Korp. The first major test for the 501st, as well as most of the Korp, would come in the fight for Armageddon. 7 regiments of the Death Korp, including the Ghostwalkers, were sent to Armageddon to support the Steel Legions fighting for their homeworld. The 501st could relate. Against the Orks, the Death Korp did not budge as day after day they would pound away at the Ork defences. And night after night, the Ghostwalkers would make charges across no-mans land to the Ork bases and raid them. The Ork Boss located in the 501st ‘s region was a Boss Gruzzthug. He is quoted as saying to his commanding officer “Dem Ghosties ave ben ‘acking thru my boyz like they’s nothin’. And whenz we tryz to blast ‘em back, those sluggs pass right thru them Ghosties bodies!” After two weeks of the Ghostwalkers, the Orks in that section fell back and the 501st won its first major victory as part of the Death Korp. After 3 years of hard fighting, the 501st was pulled out of Armageddon for transfer to a new front: Cadia.
In the late part of the 41st Millenium, the 501st was thrown into the mix and placed in protection of a city called Cathyr. The 501st had been altered greatly before heading out to Cathyr. They became a regiment of Panzergrenadiers, becoming mechanized and having the added protection of an armored battalion attached to it. When the 501st arrived at Cathyr, they proved again to be valuable to any commander in need of a shock troop force. The 501st pounded through enemy lines again and again, using their Chimera’s and Hellhounds to the fullest extent possible. After 5 months of fighting, the insurrection was stopped and the 501st was once again pulled back and rearmed and restocked. The last known position of the 501st is the planet Medusa V. Not many know why they are currently stationed there, but some speculate that the 501st is reinforcing the defenses of the planet, in preperation for some offensive maneuver.

A Note on Conscripts
The Cathyr infantrymen appreciated and respected the 501st. Reluctantly, the 501st has taken them on as conscripts, usually making them head out and springing the ambushes before rushing in to the rescue.

Standard Equipment
The standard non-combat uniform consists of a black Dress A uniform, with a red beret. However, in combat, the Dress A uniform is replaced with a Dress B uniform and over that is a greatcoat. The beret is replaced with a spiked steel helmet with a gas mask attached to it. This is not because of a past incident with a gas attack, but because the gas attacks THEY use on their enemies before charging into the fray, the gasmask prevents death. They carry a MK. I lasguns with 3 extra clips of ammunition. This is a list of what the normal 501st trooper carries: canteen, 3 frag grenades, MK. I lasguns, 3 clips of MK. I pattern ammo, gas mask, steel helmet, 2 Dress Uniform A’s, great coat, bayonet, rucksack, combat boots, 2 packs of lho sticks, 3 M-rations, utility belt, and personel effects.

Vocabulary
Achtung: Kriegan for attention
Nein Sheistin: Kriegan for “Don’t Shoot”
Hell’s Breath: nickname for the regiment’s Hellhound Battalion
The Living: nickname for the conscripts used by the 501st
The Dead: nickname for those who are originally from Krieg or who have seen enough combat to be accepted as one of the 501st’s own.

Nice one there with the fluff. Although the pics are WW-2 , but at least you know what you want for this force.

I get the impression you've simply copy-pasted the information on Krieg itself, largely because the writing quality deteriorates sharply from the moment you focus on the 501st.

Still, it is always nice to see Krieg armies. They are far more popular than GW seems to want to admit...

Bad joke, Guardsmen don't die that fast!

But seriously, some people are very cool under fire.

The Krieg are generally described as sombre and serious. They show no emotion in battle.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah, since I can't get Krieg Combat Pictures (obviously) I used pictures of WWII Waffen SS in combat. They are the main theme for my army. That would be great Elessar! I don't mind at all. The normal disposition of a soldier of the 501st is one that is very grim. By the vocabulary, once you are actually a accepted by the rest of the 501st as one of them, you are basically dead. Notice they don't wear flak armour. Just a great coat over their uniform. Once they are in the Death Korp, they truly are dead to anyone. I can't remember if I put it in their, but I had a story of a soldier of the Death Korp who was sent on a furlough after 7 straight years of service. He returned to his family on Krieg and was shot by them, because, by not dying for the Emperor, he had not paid in blood for the civil war so many years ago on Krieg. Although, while they do accept their own mortality, they remain calm under fire. Knowing one's own mortality can give them a peace of mind. Any more questions/suggestions?
