Default Starting IG First List

Hey folks,I recently opted to start IG,though I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to what works and what doesn't.I've made up a 1500 roster as a baseline.Just tell me what you all think, and maybe throw in the odd pointer aswell.Cheers

HQ-
Command Platoon-
HSO(Power Fist/P. Pistol) with 2 Meltagunners and a Master Vox
Commissar(Power Fist/P.Pistol)
Anti Tank Squad (Lascannons)
Mortar Squad

Elites-
5 Ogryns incl. Bone' Ead
5 Ratlings
10 Stormtroopers w/ Vet. Seargant (Infiltrating)

Troops-
2 Basic Infantry Platoons(2 squads w/ Meltaguns,Command Squad w/ more Meltaguns, 1 Officer has Honorifica Imperialis,P.Fist and P.Pistol)

Heavy Support-
Leman Russ Demolisher w/ Demolisher Cannon,H.Bolter Sponsons and Hull Lascannon

Total-1496 points

Sorry about the lack of detail on wargear etc. I wrote this in a hurry, cos I was gonna be late for work.Still, it's sorted now ;D

well none of the squads seem to ahve vox casters so your master vox is useless. i suggest you take the melta guns off your commanders and buy vox casters. also the master vox-melta combo doesn't work, since your command squad is the hub of your leadership you want to keep the commander out of trouble, so the meltas wont be used.

storm troopers are great if they ahve a purpose, and each purpose has a special weapon attached to it. so ST without special weapons are jsut glorified guardsmen. deep strike them and give them plasma or melta, or sit back and shoot with grenade launchers.

your ogryns need a chimera, they're pretty useless if they ahve to foot slug.

ratlings work great en masse, so i suggest either go with a maxed out squad or dont get any at all. you have to ensure one kill per turn to trigger the pinning test.

since your lascannons are the only ranged anti-tank weapon you ahve and they're in a separate squad, so they'll get mowed down turn two. i suggest disbanding them and giving the lascannons to the infantry squads.

soz,i should have put nore detail into this >-anything that can have vox does have it,and ST's have infiltration and melta's(i gots a real soft spot for them).thnx for the command platoon tips,i'll be sure to change my command group tactics to see how it works(ditto for the lascannons)
Cheers ;D

Looks like a good list... Very close range oriented with the demo and meltas...

I suggest spicing up your HSO with some power weaponry, along with your JOs, just to have a chance at counter-assault when you roll a flurry of ones on your meltas[it happens to the best of us...]. Some carapce or a refractor should make sure he lives a bit longer, and as long as the commissar is there, there's always Ld 10 foundation to fall back on.

I would reconsider the Demo HB sponson armament. If it indeed goes down with a 'Weapon Destroyed', you will probably only get a few shots with the HBs, and then whatever wounded it will end up killing it.

With the extra points, you may also want to drop a squad and a command section in favour of an Armoured Fist squad, complete with meltas... squads can be whittled down to the point of fall back advancing up the field with no transport, and those meltas will be wasted points if theyre dead before they shoot. The Chimera can be outfitted with double h-flamers to fry anything befoe its load drops out to continue the cookout.

You may still have more points, so these can go to pyskers, more power weapons, and perhaps an auspex or two, just for a free shot!

I like the mortar-sniper combo, though... that should pin someone!

I dont like the meltagun command squads. they look like a big easy target. if you want a suicide close-in-and-kill-something-and-then-die command squad go with flamers. Cheaper. Those meltagun guys will get chewed up if they try to close into firing range. Meltaguns go in big squads who actually have a chance of surviving long enough to advance into range.

Definitely give the stormtroopers some kind of special weapons - that was actually the first thing i noticed wrong about the list (melta or plasma are the best imo because you can roll with that that nice bs4 - but once again, melta is a bit iffy unless you deepstrike or infiltrate, adding another 10 points)

One more thing; the stormtrooper sgt 'vet' upgrade is pretty useless unless you use it as a route into the armoury for some extra gadgets, but this guy just has his hellpistol, so it's kind of a waste of points.

A plasma pistol or a bolter would look great on that ST Veteran Sarge. Maybe a power sword, too.

I would definately give them a special weapon, but never underestimate the humble grenade launcher. You can sit back within 24 inches, and your bolter armed Vet Sarge will contribute to the flurry of AP [square root of 25] shots going his way.

As lomg as you have a transport with smokes and extra armour, your meltas should see some action.

You should consider a small Vet. squad, mounted in a Chimera, and with 3 meltas. Fire one from the top hatch...

Nasty!

You seem to really like the melta...hmm. I would look into doctrines. Drop troopers might be nice for you, since you have a close up list. also Restricted Troops: Ogryns and Storm troopers would do well, (i would take the ratlings out) maybe Independant Commissars, to stick them in your ogryn squad, or melta squad, as they will be assaulted the turn they get to shoot the melta.

Have you considered Last Chancers? You can upgrade any number of them to specialists, which can use melta guns, and deepstrike. They are expensive, but just a thought.

An alternative tactic for you is suprisingly a shooty one, for this one the ogryns may need to go in favor oh a more shooting orientated squad (like more storm troopers) and while you are shooting, the opponent will have to decide if getting into CC is really worth sacrificing powerful models to your entrenched meltas, which can spring out and fire when the enemy is at 18" or closer.

As for actual unit choices and such, either take the command squad meltas, or the master Vox because either the HSO will be on the front lines giving morale support, or hiding in a trench giving morale support through the vox.

Also, i dont think that the mortar squad is really going to do much. maybe if you add another in, but youre already short on points, so i would forgo that for another option.
