Default IG Snipers?

Couldn't find anything that actually explained IG Snipers via search so I figured I'd just come out and ask what the deal is with them...

I read up on the Ratling Snipers in the Codex and a bit about doctrine snipers (completely over my head) but I didn't see anything that allowed standard guardsmen to take a sniper rifle outside of the two above mentioned routes. I'm sure I'm just missing something simple in the codex but if someone could explain or point me at the explination for outfitting my human troops with SR's I'd really appretiate it

Worse comes to worse I'll just convert a few human models and call them ratling snipers.

Edit: Found the bulk of the answer I was looking for... chalk this post up to sleep dep

For the reference of anyone still wondering - it's possible to take sniper rifles in special weapons squads. It's hardly worth it, though - considering that ratlings are cheaper, more numerous, and harder to dislodge from terrain.

the 'doctrine' or 'special weapons squad' approach seem more valid to me than having humans with a ratling profile running around because the points are more efficient.

The doctrine approach you spoke of is not as complicated as you may think. With any guard army, you have the option to personalize them with a handful of doctrines that make them unique to your army idea. they offer slight advantages for a considerable amount of points in most cases. The downside to this is that if you adopt any doctrines, the range of potential units you are allowed to use gets smaller, as you have to fill in a doctrine spot just to be allowed to take your stroops or rats or whatever it is that you like to take.

'Light Infantry' is the one you are thinking of. It costs 15 pts per squad. Only infantry squads can take it. and it lets them infiltrate, and it lets them take a snip rifle instead of a heavy weapon. Don't worry mods I am not violating GW by releasing this info, it is freely available online thru their 'armies/enemies of the imperium' program.

warning... once you go doctrine, it just complicates the rest of your army options and you are unlikely to go back, and they usually cost a lot for the limited amount of utility they provide.

Snipers should not be taken... alone, they are too weak to be worthwhile.

They need to be in dedicated units, such as Ratling Sniper Squads, to be efficient.

to be efficeint you need enough snipers to guarantee one kill. that one kill will trigger a pinning test, and that pinning test is the whole point of snipers. snipers in squads via light infantry are very fluffy, but not efficient.

well, I have humans instead of ratlings, and I have 7 of them and I always manage to wound at least a single model...

pinning is one aspect of snipers; the other is the fact that they can wound a carnifex or a wraithlord as easily as a grot.
but still, as with most things Guard, take a lot of them if you want them to be effective...

Ratling snipers are great!...in large squads.
I've used a unit of 10 Ratlings in a tournament and killed everything from Terminators to Space Marine Attack bikes and for the cost, it doesn't take many of either of those units to pay for the little Snipers. Unfortunately their effeciency drops the less you use. I learned that this weekend when I fought and lost a Patrol mission, Camp scenario as the attacker. I had four Ratlings aided by a search light firing away for three turns (before my units were all engaged in H-t-H) and they did nothing. Three hits per turn, one wound each time, all saved.

I used to have a small unit of snipers, but I found them to be a waste. I never really mastered the technique, so I ditched them and stuck to mortars for pinning tests.
