Default Mechanised drop troop army....

Hi, hoping some one can clarify for me.

I am building an imperial guard army based on Cadian troops. It is being modelled off the strike force in 'Black Hawk Down'.

Basically it is aimed at being a very mobile guard list, partly mechanized in Chimeras, and partly transported by helicopter/airship.

Currently I have the infantry and armoured sections, about 2500 points, ready. But until I can get round to converting helicopter models and writing them in with the VDR or ('counts as Chimera' maybe?), I need a way to represent the air support side.

I am thinking of combining mechanised with drop troops as a temporary measure. How would this work? The codex does not list them as exclusive so they can be taken together.

BUT only infantry units troops without Chimeras can deepstrike
AND all infantry units have to be given chimeras.

Would it mean that

a) the two cannot work together and it is a codex oversight?
b) they wont work together cos I have missed something stupid? ???
c) infantry squads could EITHER be given a chimera OR deepstrike? ;D

If it will not work can anyone think of a way of representing the theme?

Thanks guys, all comments appreciated 8)

there's really no point taking drop troops and mechanised, as they can't work together, they're not designed too. just take drop troops and say that your men rappel down lines from helicopters.

or buy the Imperial Armour book that has rules of Guard flyers

You can take mechanised and drop troops but if you do you're wasting a doctrine point.

Drop troops says you can deep strike any infantry squads.

Mechanised says you MUST put all infantry squads in transports.

So if you take both drop troops and mechanised any squads that would gain deep strike couldn't use it because they'd have chimeras.

The best option would be to take drop troops only.

Then mount any units that can normally use chimeras in them and deep strike the rest.

So you could have Armoured fist squads, command squads, vetrans and storm troopers riding up in transports with infantry squads and special weapons teams deep striking down during the game.

To represent helicopters you could use the rules for Valkyires. They're in one of the IA books, probably 2, don't know for sure off hand.

The Valkyrie, Vulture, and other aircraft are in Imperial Armor 1. All are highly expensive, but as most opponents don't know how to face a flyer, they usually make back their points.

and the best thing is, you can use other things to "count as" them, like heavy helicopter gunships and troop carriers.

Just buy Mechanized, and have Deep-striking Storm Troopers. In fact, stormies are a good choice to represent an elite strike force...

If you're using over 2,000 points, perhaps you should be using two separate detachments. Use one of mechanised infantry selected using doctrines from the IG codex, and one of Elysian drop troops (with associated Vulture and Valkyrie VTOL craft) from Imperial Armour 3.

I'm gonna go with MechTau on this one.
just use a doctrine point on mechanized (and if their special forces, sharpshooters ) and use your storm troopers (elite Delta Force) to deep strike behind enemy lines.

I'd go with Grenadiers over Mechanised, Storm Trooper squads are more effective than mechanised guard squads.

Don't forget to throw in some heavy weapons as well. The Rangers had some M60s with them for supression fire. Perhaps have every other squad take a heavy bolter.
