Default Kharpzychian Guard

+++I'm thinking of getting a new Traitor guard army in the very near future. The fluff is that they worship Slaanesh, their homeworld is a daemonworld called Kharpzych on the very outskirts of the Eye of Terror, but they recruit deserters and traitors from a vast array of different regiments and worlds+++

+++This is my favourite idea for a paint scheme so far:

+++Comments? Suggestions? Does it look right? Note the symbol on the chest should be a +++

N.B. I added the pic to this post for clarity

+++Also one other question:

+++What units should I start off with? They must include at least enough to fill the minimum standard FoC, and they could be any of the units in the codex as I'm not restricted by doctrines. I'd also prefer not to spend too much on the army to start off with as there are other things I want to buy as well. Size should be roughly 1000pts but I'm not too bothered+++

+++Thanks for your help+++

Well if it's an Ice World I'd recommend using Valhallans... but that'll be pricey.

As for starting off, well you're units are limited in terms of Troops. Without using Doctrines, you've got to have at least one Platoon of Guard. I'd suggest a Platoon of 35-55 men, and another (same size), or an Armoured Fist if you prefer.

Your HQ is forced as well, as Guard must have one Officer. No more, no less.

A HSO will give good Leadership, and okay counter-assault, but I prefer a JO (cheap as possible), leaving more points to be spent elsewhere.

From there, it's up to you. Some like tanks (me!!!), some don't. For fluff purposes, don't use Commissars or Preachers (they aren't that good anyway).

As for spending... well, you've picked the wrong army. Guard are expensive, however you cut it.

For colour scheme, go with whites, greys and blues. I myself like Skull White with a darkish grey (for contrast).

They cost alot, give up and go SM(Space Marines)

They're a better starter army and you need to buy less modles.

He isn't after a starter army, he said he's starting an army!

+++I'm sticking with the traitor guard idea as a) I've got the codex and it's something I've wanted to get around to for a while now and b) I already have Chaos Marines which are similar to normal marines (I do have a very few Space Marines - two squads of five, but it's never an army that's really inspired me much)+++

+++As for the cost issue, I know it's gonna be expensive however I do it, but I'm aiming for no more than roughly 130 or so. If it'll cost me 150 then that's OK, but not 200+++

+++That's an impossible goal using valhallans, I'll probably use Cadians instead for the majority of the models, bearing in mind that they're recruited from many different worlds and probably fighting away from home as well. I think the colour scheme I'll go for in the end will be urban as it fits in with the fluff that they were involved in the fighting in the Cadian Kasrs in the 13[sup]th[/sup] black crusade - any suggestions of urban colour schemes?+++

+++Also more suggestions about unit selection are welcome too!+++

You can throw in some Catachans into the mix too (since they do recruit other world's traitors). Are you gonna field an army that's slightly tainted or fully tainted? By tainted I mean how obvious is it that they serve Slaanesh? Are they gonna have Slaanesh stuff, Icons and colours on every model or only on certain guys? Are the tanks gonna being obviously Slaaneshi? Any thoughts as to how many tanks u looking to field?
These are all things you need to consider when choosing/planning the army. We can help you once you got more pinned down.

+++I'll probably use some Catachan models or parts mixed in with my regular guardsmen, so long as there's a decent way to tell the veterans apart. I quite like the idea of giving them shields from the marauder shield sprue to set them apart from the rank and file, but what should I do for the heads? The empire militia ones could look quite cool+++

+++As for how corrupted and chaotic they are, I'm thinking they're not so far down the road to damnation that they've lost all their sanity. Most of them still believe that worshipping chaos is the "right" thing to do, apart from some of the high ranking officers who know they are truly damned. As such the troops will look fairly uniform in appearance with only a chaos star/symbol of Slaanesh and a spike on the shoulder pad, plus the odd minor conversion or mutation. Speciallised troops may have a few more marks of chaos to distinguish them, e.g. any roughriders I include will have some heads from the steed of Slaanesh for their horses, and my senior/heroic senior officer for instance will have only a skull for a head where he has peeled away all the flesh. Tanks and vehicles will have a few conversions from the spiky/ chaos hatch sprue but little more+++

+++Tips for urban camo schemes?+++

Check out the Painting board for tips on camo (I know theres one there) or you could cask BloodiedFangs for tips (he's the resident Painting Expert!).

As for the heads, hmm, you could mix and match Catachan, Cadian, Empire Militia, Chaos Marauders etc. Pretty much anything goes with traitorous guard.

+++For most of the heads I'll just use the cadian or catachan ones, I'm just looking for something to set the veterans apart. I think I'll prolly go with the militia or marauders, or both! The reason I really like the militia ones is because of the hats, helmets, eyepatches etc. that really make them look like veterans with improvised equipment+++

+++I looked on the painting board and found the post you mentioned. I've also made my own imperial guard template in paint (bit like the famous SM colour generator) to help me+++
