Default Doctrines

+++Which ones do you use and why? (fluffwise)+++

+++Personally I'm not going to use any at all when I start my new guard army. Fluffwise this is because my army is part of a Traitor guard regiment who recruit deserters and traitors from a vast array of different regiments and worlds (rules and model wise it's because I can't choose between all the cool restricted troops 8) !)+++

Doctrines are over-used, so I don't use them.

However, when I do decide to take them, I use the following:

Grenadiers.
Stormtroopers.

I don't plan to use any but if I do, it would be Priests, Ogryns, Conscripts and Veterans and maybe Ratlings. This is because my army will feature a fair number of mutants (being stationed on a planet near the Eye for generations would do that to ya!)

My fluff is here just in case you wanna read it :P

Doctrines are only good if you use them for fluff reasons, not because you want the ultimate powergaming army. I'd rather use no doctrines than use a combination of Sharpshooters and Carapace.

Anyway, I have 2 planned Gaurd armies, both with different Doctrines. Drop Troops, Light Infantry, Camo-Cloaks, Special Weapons Squads, and Ratlings. This would represent an infiltration team, which is very flexible due to use of both Light Infantry and Drop Troops, however, I buy every squad Light Infantry, even though some would for sure be deep striking, just to make a kind of weakness for myself. At least, that's the plan.

My other Doctrine set for a different planned army is Rough Riders, Hunting Lizards, Light Infantry, Camo-Cloaks, and Close Order Drill. This would represent a army from the same planet, also adept at infiltration, but they make use of the native lizard like animals. All the heavy support in this army would be Giant Lizards from the Creature Feature rules in a WD a bit back.

+++I like the hunting lizards/giant lizards idea. An excuse for some seriously cool conversions +++

+++And what's wrong with sharpshooters and carapace? If there was appropriate fluff it could be acceptable... plus the army would end up a lot smaller due to extra points spent+++

+++I don't know of anyone who uses doctrines to powergame, although I don't know many who don't use them at all either+++

Sharpshooters is overrated. I have never lost to an army with Sharpshooters. Carapace armour has similar problems. It may be "fluffy", but it's not worth wasting your points. There's fluff, and there's pure bad-gaming.

The prob with doctrines is, that when you start using them, your army is zeroed. So if you want sharpshooters and carapace armor, suddenly you cant take ogryns and rough riders and priests and everything else (unless you take those edoctrines as well, but only have 5), xcept for guardsmen. I never had a problem with doctrines, I thinks its cool if you use them, but a doctrined army tends to be quite specialized, and thus, quite easy to counter!

I agree with that. I personally DO use doctrines... I have a Close Quarters themed guard (Not to be mistaken for Close Combat.) The doctrines I use are:

- Iron Discipline
- Die-Hards
- Stormtroopers
- Hardened Fighters
- Carapace Armour.

My men are obviously very speacialized, since the cost a bloody fortune per squad... each of the squads have a veteran sergeant and are armed with a flamer and a com-link to keep in tough with my master-vox too.. so were talking around 150 pts per squad after doctrines.. still I love them, I can't count how many time that carapace has saved me fromthe horrors of Necron Warriors.. or Black Legion CSM and their bolters....
