they are good if you want the extra fire power, but its up to you. they are a good way to take up leftover points and improve your numbers and a special weapon. suicide squad comes to mind....

all in all, go for it if you have some leftove points, like 60 or so.

it also gives the feeling of a army that has seen previous battles.

They are useful for special tasks that require small numbers.

A good squad for fire support would be

1 sergenant with lasgun
6 men
1 comm-link
1 plasma gun

You can't take a heavey weapon, which is a big downside...

For assualty...

1 sergeant with CC and pistol or a shotgun
6 men
1 commlink
1 meltagun

I'll toss in my vote of no on this one. I don't see a remenant squad as being a really effective use of the 30-40 points you have left over at the end of building your list.

Usually, I'm all for adding another scoring unit, but in this case your putting a large enough chunk of points out for very little in-game benefit....and it's not like this is a mobile or infiltrating unit that can claim objectives, has the durability to hold them, or the firepower to earn back some points.

For 30-40 points, you could give a whole IG platoon infiltrate using the light-infantry doctrine, for example. You could put special weapons in several squads, or pintle-mounted stubbers on several vehicles. Heck, you're getting close to enough points for a sentinal.

I think any of those option, and those are the first to come to my head, would be much better uses of the same amount of points. Without the heavy weapon, those squads aren't really contributing to the IG game plan. Other squads fit other roles (rough riders, plasma/melta toting command/vet squads, etc), but the remenant squad doesn't really fit a role, or contibute as much to the fight as its points-cost would demand.

the only use i see for remenants is fluff, in-game as foxx said, theres too much other stuff that you could spend the points on.
