Default Mortars, whats the deal?

I was playing the other day and used mortars for some odd reason. I found them to be dreadfully ineffective save on horde armies. Am i mising something, because it just seems like a weak scattered RL with indirect.

Whats meant by RL?

I found mortars to be my most effective asset to basic infantry. They combine a good-enough strength, good range, and some awesome special features, like in-direct fire and pinning capability.

I have found that mortars are best used as a harassment on the defence. When he charges your line, your mortars can take a few men on a moderately armoured squad and a lot on a weak squad. They can pin down assaulty squads, giving time for those short-ranged weapons to come into play. They can drop death on a squad out of sight. They can be used to distract you opponent, too.

Mortars... are a defensive players best friend
Mortars... strike fear of comming within 48" into your enemy

When mortars work, they're pretty cool. Unfortunately, they're a pretty big gamble, what with the scatter and all.

I like to put a mortar in my main HQ squad, which also packs the mastervox, and keep them behind total cover for the entire game. With the mortar, they can still get a shot in while doing their leadership thing for the rest of the army, and they're not at significant risk for at least the first four turns.

The mortar this way, for me, becomes "one more gun". That is, when my opponent is rolling his eyes and saying "what else can you possibly have left to fire?" I look, think, and say "ah! The mortar!" And he groans theatrically that even after all the fire my guardsmen have poured out, I've still got one more gun to go.

;D

Mortars are a gamble if you not very experienced with them. The first guardsmen I bought was a blister pack of Valhallen Mortars. They are very effective when used in a squad, becuase 3 mortars is always better than 1! I found them ineffective in my HQ squad, as they are usaully counter-attack.

i once used an army list with 12 mortars, they were very effective against Orks and Nids, they were of course combined with 9 sentinels, which held up anything that got close in close combat...

I think the mortars have become a bit better to use
with the new rules, JD. No more guess range.
Just check out this thread.
