Default Ogryns (are they worth it?)

i want to know if it's worth it for me to add an ogryn squad (or two) to my existing army.

It will involve heavy converting as i don't want any abhumans, i want an exo suit for normal guardsmen, justifying the additional stats...

I personally don't field any ogryns, but they do add a nice close combat element into any IG army. If I did take them, I would probably throw them in a chimera and have them rush up at the enemy and got locked in CC before their low armour saves can get them killed. I've just finished reading up on kroot mercs and I would probably end up just taking some of them for CC units, as you can get two groups of 20 kroot for a little more then one group of 8 ogryns, and they don't need a transport as they can already infiltrate.

I don't play IG, but I have seen ogryns used quite a lot and I know that when they're used right they can be very effective, if they're not used right then you've just wasted the points.

i like orgryns. they fulfill their own niche in the force organization. a great anti assault squad, for the enemies, its like running into a rock.i dont use them every game, cause i think they are a little pricey, but they are usually worth the points.

I have one army list that's entirely based on them. 12 Ogryns in chimeras, supported by an armored fist squad and an empty HQ chimera executing a Rhino Rush is a beautiful thing. The enemy has to choose between shooting at my tanks and shooting at my chimeras. If he shoots at the chimeras, each one has a 50% chance of containing ogryns. If the Ogryns make it across the board, they're in assault on turn 4. That's when it gets ugly. A 36 wound S6/T4 beatstick with 12 attacks (24 on the charge) is a sight to behold! Too bad you can't give bone-eads power fists... If on the other hand, the enemy chooses to target the transports, it take's a good 3 turns to shoot them all down, which means 3-4 turns of 3 pie plates in his face before he can even think about killing my tanks. If he's a real idiot, he tries to do both, and accomplishes something along the lines of one dead chimera and two shaken tanks for 2-3 turns of shooting.

Yep, mounted ogryns and pie-plate-chuckers really put the enemy between a rock and a hard place. They definitely have a place. But a squad of dismounted ogryns hanging around your deployment zone (for counter-assault) or walking across the board...those are easy points for krak missiles and lascannons.

they're ok if you want a very fluffy army but if not id rather get a greyknight for the same price. not as many wounds but the great armoursave means they'll still live. also the fact that the enemy has to roll to even be able to see them is a nice bonus. but the most important factor is that their fearless and leadership 10, so i know i can count on them getting the job done. they're better gamewise than orgyn in my opinion but really hard to squeeze in fluff wise.

Ogryns (what's the plural of Ogryn? Ogryns? Or is it like 'fish' or 'deer'? Hmm.) are intimidating. Very intimidating. Any time you lay figures onto the board that are on big bases, your opponent sits up and takes notice. From a raw psychological perspective, they're most excellent.

However, much like the tank thread currently operating, I'll say here that Ogryns are very much a matter of personal style. If you want to field some intimidating dudes, then you need look no further than Ogryns. However, if you're going to field them, you need to have something for them to do.

There are two real schools of thought on that. Either they go pick fights, or they finish fights your enemy starts.

if you play IG and want to intimidate you go for a demolsiher, nothing makes players run like a str 10 ap 2 ordanace marker

true but i don't like fielding expensive tanks, makes me nervous that they will get taken out first turn... so ogryns look like the next best choice, i was figuring on using these ogryns from this thread: http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=13653.0

Those are exceptionally cool conversions. You'll have to give us the lowdown on the required parts when you get around to building them.
