Had a bit of an argument about whether or not IG needs tanks. My opinion is that they are extremely useful, and any army that doesn't have fluff-related reasons not to should strongly consider them....but you can definitely win without them.

i personally only use chimera's with dual heavy bolters, and either heavy stubbers and storm bolters, just because they can pump out an obscene amount of shots...

If the finns could do without I can!
Well, They are very nice and so, but I think I must let the Russ be at the moment, I simply do not have the points in my IG/SoB army to field one. But a Chim is a must with its insane anti-personell firepower. I go Multilas, Heavy bolter and Heavy stubber. The rest of the armour will be contributed by the Sisters. |

I'm a pie plate fan. Bring on the Russes and Demolishers! It lays waste to the opponent while not needing tons of expensive little gun, having you use one expensive big gun. And most of the Imperial Guard have poor saves (Engineer is the only one with power armor and he isn't for combat), so the heavy armor of the tanks fix this weakness. Besides. They will absorb your fire for you that would go to your guardsmen. I say use the best of both worlds, tons of heavy and special weapons teams and lots of tanks.

Whilst an all-infantry army is perfectly viable, it is the Tanks that make the Guard what it is. The Leman Russ is symbolic of the Guard (the Baneblade even more so), and I feel no army is complete without at least 70 tonnes of tank in it.

Grrr... Okay, I get a Russ, someday. But I would rather have some assault gun type of tank. Like the german Stug or russian similar eavy metal.
One way is to use a Basilisk with Armoured crew compartment and heavy convertion. Or by a good WWII model and use as such. Voila! An artillerypiece turned tankhunter without the need to by Imperial armour volume this or that... |

Tanks are why armies can be offensive. Without tanks, no infantry can stand against tanks. Then again, without infantry, no tanks can stand against tanks...

ok that post made no sense. i think what you mean is, infantry need support from tanks, while tanks are overwhelmed without infantry. i always take tanks(two russes and a demolsiher in a 1000+ point battle), but what i love is my armoured company. now that really shows the imperial guard way fo dealing with stuff, with my doctrines im pulling out leman russes with 14 13 10 plasma cannons on each side and chainsaws and spikes on my dozerblade. tanks are what the imperial guard are all about, big shooty hammers that just nuke everything infront of them and throw themselves at anyone that comes close.
