Hey guys. I don't have a specific list I'm working on, but I'm just wondering where everybody thinks the best place for the heavy weapons teams are on the Force Org chart. Attached to the command squad? Distributed between the infantry squads? In a heavy weapons platoon?
Just curious what you veterans think.

Heavy Weapons are best spread out between dedicated Heavy Weapon Squads in the Command Platoon and in Infantry Squads. For example:
Anti Tank Squad - 3 Lascannons - ~110pts Command Section - Missile Launcher Infantry Squad - Missile Launcher Infantry Squad - Missile Launcher ~205pts This why you get plenty of big guns, but a screen of men to protect the Missile Launchers. The Lascannons can hide farther back and 'snipe' Tanks and Terminators/etc. Heavy Weapon Platoons are best used in very large games. They are unnessisary in smaller games 99% of the time. ~Andromidius

If you feel you must take a dedicated Heavy Weapons team, take them all in your HQ platoon. That's the spot on the ForceOrg chart where they occupy the least space (as in no space, since they all exist beneath your army HQ that way--this is also a neat way to get a bunch more Sentinels if you really want to).
As Heavy Support picks you have to get a completely separate command squad as part of the platoon, and that's probably just going to be a waste of points in your list. Besides, I'd rather take another tank than a Heavy Support platoon. It's roughly the same cost (or cheaper), and can potentially dish out just as much fire (and maybe more), and can move around while it's doing it.

My opinion is...
If youre playing 1500 or more, the only heavy weapons squad (6 dudes, 3 weapons) that is really worth the extra space and/or points is a mortar squad, because you want them out of sight, and 9 lasguns out of sight isn't really good.If you need be, put the mortar in the back of a widespread squad (if facing ordanance) with the guys blocking los to the mortar, but then again, you aren't paying attention to the squad. Best bet: incorparate the fire support weapons into your platoons, because you definately want your normal squads targeting infantry for the most part. Then, a nice AT and Mortar squad can serve thier roles from one spot on the battlefield. But be wary. If your opponent has armour, hell see your AT squad as a dire threat, and target that first. Its really up to personal preference, because everything has ups and downs. In my platoons, however, i usaully go right ahead with a missle launcher, beacause I like blast templates, personnaly, and it also has a nice oppurtunity for AT. But i rarely put any heavy weapons in Command HQ, as they are my last ditch assault, so why waste? Also, careful if you have a Preist, because they will waste you heavey weapons. Thats my shpeil...

If u have a basilisk, get 1 mortar to aid with the G range. U can put it in the las cannon squad because its guess range, so u dont have 2 attack the same target.

put the HW in a platoon. if you dont have enough room for one, then you move to the support squad. i like to use as many autocannons and missile launchers for my goliathians, so this strategy works w/o bogging down my troops who need to stay on the move

Lascannons are best used in AT Squads in my opinion, since they cost no more then in an infantry squad. Every single other weapon does. You can also maximise the use of Sharpshooters in this way. Mortars are best used all together as well, since then you get less wastage of lasguns and you get the gun battery special rules - very good for mincing large squads! ~Andromidius
