Default Assault Weapon Platoons?

Has anyone else considered combining the Doctrines for Heavy Weapon Platoons and Swamp Fighters?

Swamp Fighters states that any guardsman who would normally be issued a heavy weapon may instead take a grenade launcher.

So, maxing out this "Launcher Platoon" would have:

J.O. Command Squad + 4 GLs.

3 Heavy Weapon Squads @ 3 GLs / 3 Lasrifles (or laspistol & ccw?) each.

Budget in Swamp Fighter costs...

289 points, 13 Grenade Launchers, infiltrating.

Punch up the JO with a Storm Bolter and a Surveyor, and I see a unit that can get close-in for disruption of the enemy's early-game moves.

Your comments? I think it'll be fun to model...

is it a death world catachan/whatever they are?

sounds cool, although im not the biggest fan of grenade launchers, but 23 does sound like quite alot.

just wondering, is it like the space marines one, where they pay for the heavy weapon and then replace it with the special weapon?, or is it just pay for the GL?

~ The "Swamp Fighters" doctrine is out of White Dwarf #296, Sept. 2004.

~ It gives a few advantages specific to Swamp-type terrain pieces, drops armor save to 6+, unit gains "Infiltrator" status, and cannot carry heavy weapons - but may replace them with grenade launchers.

~ Doctrine compatibility and cost is the same as Jungle Fighters.

~ Fluff is for units raised on swampy planets, not quite as nasty as deathworlds. *The special rules for swamp-terrain tables look like great fun: In swamp terrain, your move in inches is equal to your armor save (Leave your terminators at home). *Swamp Monsters eat models that get too close, Immobilized vehicles take glancing hits every turn to show them sinking into the mud... (except for our amphibious Chimeras!)

~ 13, not 23.

~ Just Grenade Launchers.

throw in chamelioline for a real treat! I assume that swamps give 5+ cover saves? That'd be 13 GLs, a 4+ save, and forget anyone getting into assault range of you...of course they'd only work on a swamp-heavy board.

Oh, I think they should add the rule that any unit in swamp terrain must be engaged using night-fight rules. This would accurately reflect not the density of vegetation (the 6" rule for forests should also be applied to account for that!) but the lack of light making it through the canopy.
