Default Static or Mech?

I am planning on starting Imperial Guard once I bump my Tau list up a bit. I know with the Tau that mech is better than static, but what about the Imperial Guard? Is it better to have masses of tanks and Lascannon guardsmen or a mobile force?

Of the two, static is easiest to play.

However, we must consider the two extremes available too you as well...

SIGAFH: The common name for the Shooty Imperial Guard Army From Hell. These armies exist to pack as many guns as physically possible into the list. Lacking any kind of counter-assault, this army must outshoot the enemy, because if it doesn't, it's dead.

MECHANISED: Very mobile, but therein lies its weakness. Mechanised armies cannot boast the quantity of fire normal Guard can, and so every shot must count. As a general rule, use infantry to kill enemy tanks, and your tanks to kill enemy infantry.

Both armies are tricky to play, but in the hands of a skilled general, will pound your enemy into the dirt every time...

Guard are quite effective as Drop Troops as well, so consider that.

How about hybrid? Packing tons of mobile guns (tanks) to outshoot enemy and outmanuver as a plan B. I was thinking of doing this, but what would be the best tanks to use?

Mechanized Guard is still only average on speed. Hybrid guard just means you have a couple of chimeras to take objectives. It really isn't hybrid. A mostly infantry army with a couple chimeras and a Russ or two will have enough mobility to take an objective after the enemy has been blasted off it.

I would have a good balance so have a platoon and a chimera squad.

As the vengemod has pointed out in other threads, most IG tanks weren't meant to move. If you want a mobile tank, get a demolisher.

I'd suggest 2 chimera-mounted squads, one of them armored fist, and the other some form of elites (I favor 6 ogryns).

The rest should sit back and try to ensure that the mobile element has nothing to do but claim objectives when they arrive.

i prefer SIGAFH mainly due to the immense firepower they can unleash. I've seen an assaulty black templars army get almost annihilated in two rounds of shooting from one of them!
i also really like armoured companys, they kind of count as mechanised, but they are pure tanks instead of lots of infantry mounted in vehicles with tank support.

armored company can and should take mechanized infantry, but I think they take an elites slot.
