Default Bat. Rep. on my first game, quite a disaster D:

Hey all, played an 1000pt game on vassal today with this list against mech/biker sallies (with vulkan). His attack bikes all had multi-meltas and ignore those 'Rhino' labels on the map below, they're RAZORBACKS I tell you, and they had TL Heavy Bolters . Also there were 4 objectives placed in each quarter of the board, around the middle of each quarter, give or take a bit .

This is a roughly drawn map showing how we set up, my 'Russ and the stormtroopers being held in reserve; :P

Anyway, I set up first so I had no way of knowing that i'd be facing multi-melta which was an instant death sentence to my russ in reserve.

First turn saw me foolishly bouncing autocannon rounds of the vinicator hull instead of demolishing his command razorback. I managed to down one marine from the combat squads too, that was all, everyone basically staying where they were, even, foolishly, the armoured fist squad.

His next two turns saw me doing nothing (failing to down marines, bouncing shells of the vindi' and failing to do much with the armoured fist squad :P) he, however, took both of my infantry squads down to the Heavy Bolter Teams as his razorbacks, attack bikes and single plasma cannon (from one combat squad) fired away at them. Also, one of the attack bikes sped through the large right hand forest to try and do in my mounted AF squad.

3rd turn saw the Russ arrive, I placed him splat down in the way of the Attack bike Squadron that had swooped in along the bottom of the map, another error on my part, not that there was anywhere safe for it though, with the other attack bike on the other flank. My stormtroopers also arrived, landing on target and blowing up the HQ razorback with their meltaguns (which was in the way of the vindi i realised, after I'd placed the scatter :P)
This did, however, open up the command squad as a target for the Russ, so boom it went and 3 bodyguards did fall (though i did land another hit on the scatter dice, placing the central hole over Vulkan, alas, he goes unwounded thank to the wounding rules, *sniff*). But then of course, because I'd forced Vulkan out of his vehicle on my turn, he was free to assault and finish of the stromtroopers (after he roasted a few, of course). Then his attack bike wrecked my chimera and he smoked the Russ, all with those pesky multi-melta attack bikes. He then proceeded to claim three objectives and 'contest' another before killing everything I had on turn 5. Measly me, however, had only killed those aforementioned marines (4 of 'em) and wounded both of the lone attack bikes. That was it.

Things I should have done/shouldn't have done.
  • Actively involved the AF squad from turn 1.
  • Starting off with the Russ in play, however I feel that it couldn't have been avoided unless i knew the guy was going to field multi-melta bikes. I'd planned on destroying any anti-tank before he came on, but that proved impossible in this battle.
  • Firing the autocannons at the weakly armoured razorbacks and not the AV13 Vindicator, sheer stupidity on my part and...
  • ...so should have taken out the vindi with the stormtroopers when i had the chance, instead of helping Vulkan out of his majesty's vehicle so he could slaughter the squad in his turn.
[*]Remembered and utilised the higher ballistic skill of my SO and JO. I ended up counting them as ordinary sergeants for the whole game, just don't ask :0.[/list]
Any advice on tactics and/or for my list, it'd be much appreciated .

main thing

Russ goes on the field regardless. Put him at the back and rain fire. The mult-melta will take at least a turn to get to 12" (at 24 the shots would probally just bounce off anyway, he'd need a 6 to glance). your russes should always be on the board as early as you can, they kill almost anything and most shots don't do jack. You can't afford to leave them out of half the game.

and btw JO are just vet sgts, except they have the command rule.

the only other thing I'd say.
if the bikes were such a threat target them with the autocannons first and let the russ target the marines(and possibly the vendy, 2d6 and choose the highest is nice)

Good point, I'll remember that in future .

That's odd... on the reference sheet in the book it says they have WS + BS 4, as does the print out reference sheet... I'll check the latest errata and see if that rectifies it.

Hmmm... good point, i was a bit unsure of what to kill first and with what in that game.

Thanks.

EDIT - Nope, the errata doesn't have anything on the matter, which is strange because they said that they'd upped the priests WS and BS to 4 by accident and said that you should ignore the 'platoon commander' entry, yet nothing on JO's... ???

Oh...

Bum.

I just realised I forgot to even deploy my third infantry squad, forgot my heavy weapon team for my command platoon and forgot to utilize my smoke launchers for my chimera... :-X :P :-[

EDIt - Oh dear, and I think i get the list wrong anyway, I'm like 100 odd pts under :P.

I think Johnnyboy was refering to the fact that JO do not have a better profile than a Vet. Sargeant and, with the exception of the Command rule, they are basically the same.

I am correct? :P

Yeah, except the reference sheets say they have extra WS and BS, in contradiction to the unit entry :P.

you shouldnt have been shooting at the vindicator with your Auto squad anyways, with AV 13 against your S 7 attack at best you can glance it...
oh Id recomend switching for missile launchers great for tanks, marines, and swarms...

I know, i mentioned it in the first post.

Good idea, but I'm going to be using the other list anyway, the one you commented on .
