Under Pressure

[size=10pt]When any Tau unit sporting a gun of any type (excluding kroot) is assaulted, they fire first as if they were in defensive terrain. However, this is worked out like a round of shooting, where every member of the defending squad fires their weapon once for every attack that model has. Remove offensive models before close combat begins and use initiative to work out the assault as usual. The enemy loses it's +1 attacks for charging but retains all other bonuses and strikes first (regardless of weapons that always strike last, such as powerfists) when close combat begins.

Example: A unit of 12 Fire Warriors is assaulted by a unit of 6 Space Marines. The Tau fire a total of 13 shots (11 for the shas'la, 2 for the shas'ui) and score 1 wound on the attacking Space Marines. The assault then beginss.[/size]

I was wondering what you guys think of this rule, if you think it needs to be changed, tell me!

I like the rule, but it would probably be better if all armies used it. Tau aren't the only race that can shoot are charging enemies! However, if the assaulting unit has frags of whatever other aremies use(im guard!) the rule should be negated, as they are hugging for cover trying to avoid a faceful of shrapnel!

I would love to use the ability in game, as it would rape nids like nothing! However, it is too unbalanced as it lessens Tau's one weakness- close combat. Prehaps it would work better as a veteran skill and could be countered if the opponant carries frag or plasma grenades. Also, removing the bonus for charging is WAY too unfair.

How's about they take a leadership test, and if they fail they cannot do it?

I would love to use the ability in game, as it would rape nids like nothing!* However, it is too unbalanced as it lessens Tau's one weakness- close combat. Prehaps it would work better as a veteran skill and could be countered if the opponant carries frag or plasma grenades.* Also, removing the bonus for charging is WAY too unfair.

Oops... After consideration, I agree, removing the +1 for charging is unfair. However, frag grenades and such are already accounted for in their rules ( they already strike simultaneously during CC ).

And besides that, Photon Grenades already have the same effect, regardless of the circumstance. Of course, Photon Grenades don't fry SMurfs...
