So i have been mulling around the site, and the internet, for the past few months looking for inspiration to make a prop 40k weapon, after failing (miserably) to try and make a real scale Bolter, i went about starting a little smaller, so i finally decided to make a Bolt Pistol instead
Firstly i have to state, i plan to make it LIGHTWEIGHT and thus easier to carry and transport, so i am going to use foam board (the prototype MIGHT be made from Card Board, as i get a bunch of it from work, but then its on to the foam board) for those of you asking, "Why foamboard?!" i offer the following answers, ahem: 1) its not as easily compressed as other materials (seeing as it kind of already is compressed) 2) its cheaper than conventional building materials, do you have ANY idea how expensive making a solid plastic bolt pistol would be?! 3) its easily sanded/shaped into other more organic (ie. handle) shapes and so i give you the first stage... well kinda... a roughly drawn out template that will either be the first piece of the prototype, or a template in order to make a [acronym=Foam Board]FB[/acronym] prototype: ![]() I know you can't REALLY see the template right now but give me a break, i'll cut it out later and upload a better picture, hopefully and for those of you who want (i'm sure there's someone out there as geeky as me) i made a few templates (very rough might i add) to make your own: ![]() note: the square in the corner should be a 1.5" by 2" square, so scale it up until it is, then print out each of the templates also take note of the letters and the x# the letter corrisponds to each specific template, the number is the number of (3/16") Foam Board you will need to layer to get it to about the right thickness for a normal marine Bolt Pistol, if you would like i can make a quick little diagram of how the layers should fit together but it is basically like this: Bolt Pistol: D->D->C->C->B->B->A->A<-A<-B<-B<-C<-C<-D<-D Ammo Clip: _ _ _ _ II->II->I->I->x<-I<-I<-II<-II (note: the x is simply the center line, not a piece) |

You could make the bottom portion out of a Nerf Maverick.
They kinda have the same look for the grip and if you remove the cylinder the bore and frame look to be around the right size for a human Bolt Pistol also. ![]()

http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=230917 you're pretty close, if not dead on.

Looks interesting, and I'm glad to see you're located in New Jersey where replica firearms aren't restricted. If you were British, you'd technically have broken the law already.
Hope this turns out well, it certainly looks like if it gets detail it'll be menacing enough... But presumably as light as a feather compared to other materials.

No.
IMITATION FIREARMS are fine if you are over 18. REALISTIC IMITATION FIREARMS you cannot have, at all EVER. Unless you are part of the services or an Airsoft Skirmisher. There are rules on what make it "realistic". I.e, size, material and colour. E.g. anything 66%+ transparent is not "realistic". Anything that is not transparent or brightly coloured is a grey area (pardon the pun). So if you are in the UK and planning to make fake guns BE CAREFUL. Check your laws. Tell the police what you plan to do. If you have to, get some kind of toy Firearm manufacturer liscence or something. Or just become an airsoft skirmisher. Then you're exempt from the rules and can have RIF's even if they are not airsoft. But check first anyway.

Yeah, it's the grey area of it all that makes it technical. Cardboard isn't listed as one of the IF colours (AFAIK, the home office only approved transparent, bright red, orange, green, blue, pink, purple and yellow.) You can also purchase, import, or manufacture RIF's if you are able to claim they are for Re-enactment, Film, TV & Theatrical productions or you're a Crown Servant. These have additional requirements like photographic ID and proving you are what you claim you are.
But nonetheless for British users it's not a good idea to build a replica, even of a sci-fi firearm because it still looks real enough, and the apparent qualification for "real" is that is has to not be certain colours and is shaped like a gun more than 38mm high and 70mm long.
